railway car inspector
*Position Summary:*
In this role you will be responsible for inspecting and repairing railcars to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Railcar repairs may include welding, replacing, straightening, and fabricating and painting components.
*Duties:*
- Examines railcar components for structural defects and obstructions.
- Operate handheld scanner.
- Turns hand wheel to test brakes and ascertain that they are in operating condition.
- Inspects and tests air hoses for leakage.
- Inspects wheel trucks for dragging equipment.
- Prepares reports on findings.
- Remove and replace couplers, airline gaskets, hoses, or other components.
- Paint cars and components.
- Inspect, repair, or replace steel sections.
- Straighten or fabricate, then replace steel parts.
- Operate acetylene torches for cutting and/or shaping metals parts and operate electrical and gas welding equipment.
- Operate forklifts, Scissor Lifts, and other shop equipment.
- Working at heights training
- Working in confined space
- Operate vehicles, pick-up trucks to transport workers.
- Re-rail cars and locomotive by using re-railing equipment.
- Tag cars in need of immediate repairs.
- Put up Blue Flags at both ends of a track and lock the switches with private locks.
- Perform other related duties as required.
*Responsibilities & Qualifications:*
- High School Diploma or equivalent required, college/university preferred.
- Welding certificate is preferred.
- Previous experience in rail car repairs an asset.
- Ability to set priorities, establish and execute a plan of action.
- Valid driver?s license with a clean driving abstract.
- Good hearing and vision / Good hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude
- Pass pre-employment medical / Criminal Background Check
*Working Conditions:*
- Working in a high-risk environment, exposure to heavy moving equipment.
- Work takes place outdoors so workers may be exposed to various weather conditions.
- Work may involve bending and lifting up to 50lbs on a regular basis.
- Ability to work flexible hours for extended periods of time.
- Physically able to complete all tasks as assigned including repetitive movements through the duration of a shift.
- Overtime and weekend work availability required.
- Must work using all required PPE.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $23.72-$26.12 per hour
