Electrical Designer and Estimator

Location: South of England (with UK-wide projects Salary: £50,000-£55,000, depending on experience Hours: Full-time Employment type: Permanent

We're recruiting an Electrical Designer and Estimator for an established business delivering mechanical and electrical projects in data centres, telecoms facilities and other technical environments. Much of its work involves upgrading existing facilities, where understanding what is already on site is just as important as producing a good design.

This could be a particularly interesting move if you're working in an electrical design consultancy and want to get closer to the client, the commercial decisions and the finished project. You'll meet customers, survey their sites, develop the electrical solution and help price the work, then stay involved as it moves into delivery.

You'll join a small design team of around three, working alongside a CAD operator and a Mechanical Engineer. You'll be able to draw on that practical project knowledge as you get to know the business, with guidance from the Director as you develop your own designs and client relationships.

What you'll be doing

• Meet clients to understand their requirements and carry out detailed electrical site surveys.
• Develop electrical designs with input from the engineers and architects on the project team.
• Take designs through to tender or construction stage, including work on design and build projects.
• Help prepare estimates and bids, considering how the proposed design will be delivered and priced.
• Provide electrical guidance to project managers and the wider team.
• Stay involved during installation, helping ensure the work meets the design and client specification.
• Support and develop assigned technical colleagues as your responsibilities grow.

What we're looking for

You'll have a sound grounding in electrical design and the confidence to discuss technical requirements with clients. You may currently be in a building services consultancy, or in a design role with a contractor. Either way, you'll want to see more of the project than the design stage alone.

You'll bring an HNC, HND or degree in Electrical Engineering , or equivalent experience, and knowledge of British and European design standards. Experience of how designs are developed, tendered and built will be valuable.

Data centre or telecoms experience would be useful, but isn't essential. AutoCAD experience is an advantage rather than a requirement. What matters most is your ability to work through a problem, communicate your thinking and develop designs that make sense in practice.
