Senior Optical Design Engineer (m/f/d) Our client develops innovative micro-optics and photonics solutions for future display and projection systems. These technologies are used, among others, in Smart Glasses, Augmented Reality applications, and laser-based display systems.

The company is part of an internationally positioned corporate group and contributes specialized know-how in the fields of optics, micro-optics, and photonics to the development of new technologies. The focus is on the development and validation of innovative prototypes that serve as the basis for future products.

The Jena location is currently in an early growth phase. As a result, the position offers the opportunity to help shape technical developments at an early stage and to contribute to an environment that combines the agility of a start-up with the resources of an established corporate group.

Tasks, Competencies, and Responsibility

• Development of innovative micro-optical concepts and designs for laser-based display and projection technologies
• Design, simulation, and optimization of optical systems and components
• Development of laser beam-shaping and beam-combining solutions
• Design and simulation of miniaturized optical systems
• Analysis of optical, thermal, and mechanical system properties
• Collaboration on the architecture and design of optomechanical, optoelectronic, and MOEMS-based systems
• Evaluation and integration of new technologies in the field of micro-optics and photonics
• Technical support of functional models and prototypes through to verification
• Identification and evaluation of suitable technology partners and suppliers
• Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams from the fields of MEMS, micro-optics, and system development
• Support in technical coordination with external development and manufacturing partners

Professional Requirements Must-haves

• Completed studies in Physics, Photonics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable field
• Several years of practical experience in the development of optical or photonic systems in industry or research
• Experience in optical design and the simulation of complex optical systems
• Experience in laser beam shaping (beam-shaping technologies)
• Proficient use of professional optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, FRED, Quadoa, or a comparable solution
• Experience in using CAD, FEM, or comparable development and simulation tools
• Ability to analyze technical issues in a structured manner and drive solutions forward independently
• Fluent English skills, both written and spoken

Other Plus Points

• Knowledge in the field of laser diodes and photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
• Experience with MEMS- or MOEMS-based systems
• Knowledge in the field of micro-optics
• Contact points with Smart Glasses, AR, or waveguide applications
• Experience in collaborating with external development partners or suppliers
• Knowledge in the field of optomechanics or optoelectronics
• Fluent German skills, both written and spoken
