Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) (Surveying Technician - Surveying)
The Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) regards diversity as a cultural self-evident truth and a quality criterion of an excellence university. Accordingly, we welcome all applicants who wish to commit themselves through their performance and personality to our success and with us for the success of all.
At the Fakultät Verkehrswissenschaften „Friedrich List“, within the Professur für Kraftfahrzeugtechnik, a position is available as of 01.11.2026 as a
Research Associate / Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) for scenario-based validation of automated driving functions up to SAE Level 4 (subject to personal requirements E 13 TV-L)
until 31.08.2030 (duration of employment according to WissZeitVG), with the option for extension in follow-up projects. There is the opportunity for your own scientific further qualification (generally a doctorate). The place of work is Dresden. The safe introduction of automated driving functions represents one of the central challenges of future mobility systems. While classic driver assistance systems are increasingly being supplemented by highly automated functions, reliable methods for proving safety, robustness, and performance are still lacking.
Within the framework of the Smart Mobility Lab, the Professur für Kraftfahrzeugtechnik is developing the Dresdner Methode for this purpose, a scenario-based approach for the validation of automated driving functions based on real traffic data, virtual scenarios, and highly immersive simulation. The goal is the scientifically sound validation of driver assistance systems as well as highly automated driving functions up to SAE Level 4. The Dresdner Methode combines real traffic data, standardized scenario descriptions, virtual simulation, and data-based evaluation and verification procedures into a continuous methodology for the validation of automated driving functions.
For the scientific work, the Dresden Driving Simulator (DDS), driver behavior models, and the cyber-physical test setup (CVA), a validation platform based on real traffic data, are available.
The activity takes place in close cooperation with internal and external project partners, especially the TUD. The Professur für Kraftfahrzeugtechnik is part of the Fakultät Verkehrswissenschaften „Friedrich List“ and offers diverse interdisciplinary cooperation opportunities in research and teaching. The position enables independent scientific work as well as the active co-design of innovative methods for scenario-based development and validation of future driving systems. You will work on the scientific further development of the Dresdner Methode and will particularly undertake:
- Development and scientific further development of scenario-based validation procedures for automated driving functions up to SAE Level 4
- Execution of validation studies in the Dresden Driving Simulator as well as in the cyber-physical test setup (CVA)
- Development of standardized scenarios based on ASAM OpenSCENARIO and OpenDRIVE
- Analysis of real traffic, vehicle, sensor, and simulation data to identify safety-relevant scenarios
- Evaluation of safety, robustness, and performance of automated driving functions
- Development of scientifically sound verification procedures for the validation of automated driving functions
- Publication of your research results at international conferences and in scientific journals
- Collaboration in national and international research projects
- University degree (Master or Diplom Universität) in Fahrzeugtechnik, Informatik, Elektrotechnik, Mechatronik or comparable disciplines
- Sound knowledge in the fields of automated driving, driver assistance systems, verification and validation, especially functional safety
- Good programming skills, preferably in Python, C#
- Strong analytical skills
- Interest in...
