Research Associate (m/f/d) in the working group "...
The Technische Universität Clausthal is a research-intensive university with high national and international networking. The approximately 80 professors, 1,100 employees, and 3,000 students enjoy short distances, personal interaction, and the fascinating landscape in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Harz. As the largest employer in the region, TU Clausthal is the most important economic factor and offers cultural diversity and internationality. Across the entire university, TU Clausthal has committed itself to the guiding theme of the "Circular Economy" and pursues the goal of contributing to the development of a sustainable society in the digital age through research, teaching, and administration.
At the Institut für Chemische und Elektrochemische Verfahrenstechnik of the Technischen Universität Clausthal, within the framework of a research project for the development of a scalable methanol reformer for HT-PEM fuel cell systems, the following position is available at the earliest possible date:
Research Associate (m/f/d) in the working group "Chemische Energiespeicherung"
EG 13 TV-L, full-time (39.8 hours/week), for 30 months to be filled on a fixed-term basis.
The classification is based on the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L). Depending on personal qualifications and assigned tasks, the classification is up to pay group 13 TV-L. The workplace is generally suitable for part-time work, but must be covered throughout the full day. As part of the activity, the opportunity for a PhD at TU Clausthal is offered.
The Institut für Chemische und Elektrochemische Verfahrenstechnik (ICVT) develops catalysts and reactors for chemical and electrochemical processes. A focus of the Chemische Energiespeicherung working group is the development, modeling, and optimization of chemical reactors and processes for the storage and use of renewable energies. Here, experimental investigations are linked with mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, and optimization.
Within the framework of the research project, a novel and scalable methanol reformer system for hydrogen supply for HT-PEM fuel cells is being developed together with an industrial partner. Due to its high volumetric energy density, good storage and transport properties, and the possibility of renewable production, methanol represents a promising chemical energy carrier for decentralized and mobile energy systems.
The goal of the sub-project at the ICVT is the model-based development and optimization of a scalable reactor topology for methanol reforming. To this end, mathematical models to describe the coupled reaction, heat, and mass transport processes are to be developed and used for the design and optimization of the reformer. In addition to steady-state operation, the focus is particularly on the dynamic behavior of the system, for example, during the startup process and during load changes. The developed models and reactor concepts will be validated during the further course of the project through experimental investigations and the reformer developed together with the project partners.
Responsibilities
- Development and implementation of mathematical models to describe the coupled reaction, heat, and mass transport processes in methanol reforming
- Steady-state and dynamic simulation of the reformer and reactor system, in particular investigation and optimization of the startup behavior
- Model-based development, evaluation, and optimization of different reactor topologies as well as concepts for heat integration and heat transfer
- Conducting parameter studies and numerical optimizations to identify suitable geometries and operating conditions
- Development and investigation of scaling strategies for different performance parameters of the reformer
- Evaluation of experimental data and validation of the developed models and reactor concepts
- Close scientific cooperation with the participating working groups of TU Clausthal as well as the industrial partner
- Scientific preparation, presentation, and publication of the research results
Requirements
The following are required:
- An above-average academic degree (Master's or comparable) in Chemieingenieurwesen, Verfahrenstechnik or a comparable engineering course of study
- In-depth knowledge in the field of chemische Reaktionstechnik, heat and mass transfer, and/or mathematical modeling of chemical reactors
- Strong interest in mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, and the development of technical reactor systems
- Experience in handling scientific software and programming, for example Python, MATLAB, COMSOL Multiphysics or comparable tools, is desirable
- Analytical, structured, and independent way of working as well as strong teamwork skills
- Very good English language skills in speaking and writing; good German language skills are desirable
- Interest in working in an interdisciplinary research environment as well as with an industrial partner
