Customs & Border Compliance Officer

In this role, you are the point of contact for all customs and border compliance activities within the shipping and port environment. You stand between the operational teams, customers, and the various authorities, ensuring that the flow of goods at the borders proceeds correctly and efficiently.

Specifically, you will:

• be responsible for all aspects of border compliance and customs activities within the shipping and port environment, with attention to compliance with legislation and a smooth flow of goods;
• maintain contact with port and customs authorities and ensure the obtaining and maintaining of the necessary authorizations and permits (such as AEO, Bonded Warehouse, Temporary Storage);
• act as an internal knowledge center for customs matters and customs compliance for both internal and external stakeholders;
• set up, manage, and roll out organization-wide procedures, work instructions, reports, and KPIs regarding customs processes and customs clearance;
• follow up on, monitor, and where possible automate administrative formalities via the existing IT systems;
• proactively analyze operational processes and IT systems and propose ways to further improve them;
• think along and act during incidents or blockades at the border and ensure a fast and sustainable solution.

In doing so, you take on a visible role in the daily operation as well as in the further expansion of the customs and compliance policy.

• You are fluent in English; knowledge of other languages is a plus.
• Ideally, you have experience or knowledge in shipping, ports, or customs activities, or you are highly motivated to quickly learn complex customs matters and customs legislation.
• You learn quickly, work hands-on, and continue until a problem is structurally resolved.
• You communicate clearly and easily build sustainable relationships with internal colleagues, customers, and external partners such as customs and port authorities.
• You can set priorities, work autonomously, and constantly look for improvements in processes and systems.
• You are willing to be on stand-by approximately once every 12 weeks during weekends and early evenings, so that operations continue to be supported.
• You meet the requirements to obtain a legally required positive security assessment for critical functions in the port.
