ORGANIZATION Tata Steel in IJmuiden operates 24/7 in a production environment where staff absence is felt immediately. Absence that is addressed too late escalates faster here than in an office environment-early, structured follow-up is therefore not a formality but a prerequisite. Within the HR organization, you are the first operational link: the call you make on day three determines the rest of the process.
Your tasks
A single phone call on day three determines whether an absence remains a brief interruption or develops into a case that drags on for months.
- You will conduct conversations with absent employees based on a set call script, assessing the expected duration and the barriers preventing a return to work-without recording medical details, in compliance with GDPR.
- You will immediately translate what you hear into a complete file in the HR and absence management system, including action points and the first critical deadlines, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
- You will coordinate with the occupational health service for urgent consultations and, where necessary, deploy the provider network-such as physiotherapy, psychological, or ergonomic interventions.
- You will identify when a file becomes too complex, long-term, or sensitive for this initial contact and ensure a targeted transfer to internal absence specialists or case managers.
- You will be the first point of contact for the employee during the first week of absence-professional, yet with an eye for what remains unsaid.
