The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environment offers a creative and stimulating environment with approximately 100 employees, and conducts internationally recognized research, education, and environmental monitoring in the following subject areas: restoration ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology, and zooecology. Subject Description
The subject of the position is zooecology with a focus on plant-animal interactions in temperate and boreal forest ecosystems within the application areas of forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage. The subject develops the knowledge base regarding animal ecology and their interactions with humans, landscapes, and climate.
Duties
The holder shall be responsible for the development of research within the subject of zooecology, generally and specifically within the subject focus, in collaboration with other researchers in the faculty and the university. The holder shall also contribute to the pedagogical development within the subject. This means that the holder shall:
- act in accordance with SLU's vision, goals, and values
- contribute to the strategic development of the department, the faculty, and SLU
- develop and lead an internationally prominent environment for research
- integrate zooecological research with the application areas of forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage
- publish scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals
- seek external research funding at national and international levels
- supervise doctoral students and be a mentor for postdocs
- develop, lead, and participate in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
- collaborate with researchers within the department, faculty, and other parts of SLU, as well as nationally and internationally
- interact and further develop networks with the surrounding society regionally, nationally, and internationally
- communicate research results
- perform administrative duties within the department, the faculty, and the university
The department has a parallel-language work environment. The holder of the position will be able to perform most of their duties in English. As a government agency, the university has Swedish as its main language according to the requirements of the Language Acts. At SLU, non-Swedish speaking staff are expected to, within four years of being employed, have such knowledge of Swedish that they can access information in Swedish. The department will support the holder in achieving this.
Eligibility
The applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- have obtained a doctoral degree in a subject relevant to the position or have equivalent scientific competence
- be scientifically skilled in the subject of the position
- be pedagogically skilled
- have demonstrated leadership skills
- have good knowledge of English
Assessment Criteria
As assessment criteria for employment, the degree of such skill that is a requirement for eligibility for employment shall, in the first instance, apply.
When assessing scientific skill, the following will be considered:
- completed research efforts and ongoing research within the subject focus (plant-animal interaction in temperate and boreal forest ecosystems)
- ability to integrate zooecological research with the application areas of forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage
- expertise in wildlife management and forest damage
- future visions for research within the subject
- ability to independently initiate and conduct outstanding research within the subject
- ability to obtain external research funding through competition
- ability to supervise and examine doctoral students as well as be a mentor for postdocs
When assessing pedagogical skill, the ability to do the following will be considered:
- plan, implement, and evaluate one's own teaching at all levels
- supervise and examine students at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
- convey and implement one's pedagogical vision
- integrate current research and scientific approaches into pedagogical work
Furthermore, the following will be considered:
- ability to develop and lead operations and personnel within academia
- leadership vision
- ability to collaborate
- ability to interact with external stakeholders and the surrounding society
- ability to communicate research results and development work
The position is offered to the person who, after a qualitative holistic assessment, is judged to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current duties as well as contribute to a positive development of the operations.
