Pastoral Care Officer (Primary School – Student Well-being)
Job Details
Working Hours: Mondays to Fridays, 7:15 AM – 2:45 PM (Inclusive of a 1-hour lunch break) . Additional hours may occasionally be required to support students, paid at an hourly rate.Service is typically not required on Saturdays, Sundays, gazetted public holidays, and school holidays.
Location: Tao Nan School – 49 Marine Crescent, Singapore 449761 (Managed by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan).
Job Description & Core Responsibilities
We are looking for an empathetic, patient, and highly structured individual to step into the role of a Pastoral Care Officer. Your main objective is to provide critical emotional, social, and behavioral guidance to primary school students, serving as a trusted pillar within the school's ecosystem.
- Student Emotional & Behavioral Support
- First Line of Support: Provide specialized one-on-one pastoral guidance for primary school students who are feeling anxious, distressed, withdrawn, or emotionally overwhelmed.
- Constructive Management: Apply modern restorative practices, active listening, and proven de-escalation strategies to handle sensitive playground or classroom incidents constructively.
- Safe Environment: Build authentic, trusting relationships with students while establishing a safe, confidential space for them to process their concerns.
- Case Management & Well-being Monitoring
- Risk Identification: Actively identify and closely monitor students who may be vulnerable or at-risk due to mental health, social integration, or complex family dynamics.
- Coordinated Support: Conduct regular check-ins and track changes in student behavior, attendance, and general wellness. Collaborate seamlessly with Year Heads (YH), School Counselors, and the Discipline Mistress.
- Record Keeping: Keep immaculate, confidential documentation of student progress, behavioral changes, and early intervention notes.
- Crisis Intervention & Safeguarding
- Rapid Response: Act immediately during live student meltdowns, emotional breakdowns, peer conflicts, or aggressive behavioral issues.
- Stabilization: Focus on de-escalating heightened scenarios safely, prioritizing the physical and psychological safety of all parties involved.
- Wellness Programming & Stakeholder Engagement
- Preventive Initiatives: Support, plan, and conduct proactive Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities and school-wide peer support programs.
- Family Communication: Coordinate and communicate with parents or guardians with high sensitivity regarding student well-being and updates.
- External Networking: Partner with external community resources, social services, and mental health professionals when specialized care escalations are required.
Job Requirements
- Minimum Qualification: At least a Diploma in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, Education , or a related behavioral science discipline.
- Proven Track Record: Minimum of 2 years of experience in primary school student well-being, pastoral care, or behavioral support; OR 2 years of direct exposure to counseling and mentoring students aged 7 to 12 with social-emotional needs.
- Core Competencies: Superb active listening and communication skills tailored to primary-school-aged children.Ability to remain fully calm, patient, and composed during high-stress student meltdowns.Basic competence in student conflict resolution and positive behavior reinforcement models.
- Ethical Standard: High level of integrity, with an ironclad commitment to maintaining student confidentiality and executing sound judicial boundaries. Selected personnel must sign an official Undertaking to Safeguard Official Information form.
