Health And Safety Manager
Key Responsibilities
- HSE Management System
Develop, implement, and continuously improve the company’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) management system, policies, and procedures. Develop annual HSE objectives, plans, and improvement initiatives. Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and company requirements.
- Risk Assessment and Safety Management
Identify workplace hazards and conduct regular risk assessments. Develop and implement appropriate risk control and mitigation measures. Conduct Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for high-risk activities. Monitor safety risks across production, warehouse, maintenance, logistics, and other operational areas.
- Workplace Safety Inspection
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits across the factory. Identify unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviors and ensure corrective actions are implemented and closed on time. Monitor the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Ensure compliance with requirements related to machinery safety, electrical safety, fire safety, chemical handling, working at height, and other high-risk activities.
- Incident Investigation and Prevention
Lead investigations into workplace accidents, injuries, near misses, and other safety incidents. Identify root causes and develop corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Monitor accident trends and implement measures to reduce workplace incidents and injuries. Maintain accurate records and prepare regular safety reports.
- Safety Training and Awareness
Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors. Conduct safety induction training for new employees. Organize regular training on fire safety, emergency response, first aid, PPE, and safe working procedures. Promote a strong safety culture and increase employee awareness of workplace health and safety.
- Emergency Preparedness
Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures. Organize regular emergency drills, including fire evacuation, chemical spills, medical emergencies, and other relevant scenarios. Ensure emergency equipment and facilities are properly maintained and readily available.
- Compliance and External Coordination
Ensure compliance with applicable Ghana occupational health and safety laws and regulatory requirements. Coordinate with government authorities, regulatory bodies, customers, and third-party auditors during inspections and audits. Maintain all required HSE records, licenses, reports, and compliance documentation.
- Team Management
Lead and manage the Health and Safety team, including Safety Officers and Safety Supervisors. Set team objectives, KPIs, and work plans. Provide coaching, guidance, and technical support to HSE team members. Work closely with Production, Engineering, HR, Administration, Warehouse, and other departments to improve overall workplace safety.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field. Professional qualifications in Health and Safety are highly preferred.
Experience
Minimum 5–8 years of relevant experience in Health and Safety or HSE management. At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory or managerial position . Experience in a manufacturing, FMCG, industrial, construction, or large-scale production environment is preferred. Experience managing health and safety in a large manufacturing facility is an advantage.
Professional Knowledge & Skills
Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and practices. Strong experience in risk assessment, incident investigation, emergency response, and safety inspections. Good knowledge of machinery safety, electrical safety, fire safety, chemical handling, PPE, and working-at-height safety. Good understanding of Ghana occupational health and safety laws and regulatory requirements. Experience with HSE KPIs such as LTIFR, TRIR, Lost Time Injury, Near Miss, Accident Rate, and Safety Inspection Closure Rate.
Certifications
NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA, or other recognized HSE certifications are highly preferred. ISO 45001 knowledge or certification is an advantage. First Aid and Fire Safety certifications are preferred.
