Postdoc in adaptive immersive experiences

Project Description

The employment as a postdoc is located within human-computer interaction (HCI), with a focus on adaptive immersive technologies for participatory activities within urban cultural heritage. The postdoc will work with Assistant Professor Luis Quintero, in collaboration with Professor Henricus Verhagen and Professor Uno Fors at Stockholms universitet.

The project focuses on how we can design adaptive immersive experiences in XR (augmented, virtual, and mixed reality) for cultural heritage and evaluate the potential of contextual data to improve access to, interpretation of, and engagement with shared experiences. The research will specifically aim to investigate how urban cultural heritage can move from static reconstruction to shared personal activities that support collective meaning-making. The research activities will be located within the technical and scientific aspects of game design and HCI. Including development of prototypes that integrate multimodal data collection from movement and interaction streams, algorithmic development for group-aware adaptation in real-time, and evaluation with mixed methods of adaptive games and immersive experiences.

Tasks

We are seeking a postdoc with a technical background in areas such as game design, immersive technologies, and/or computer vision. Preferably with experience in the design of interactive prototypes involving immersive technologies, interactive media, and/or games; as well as competence in conducting empirical research on topics related to technology for cultural heritage, architecture, or related areas.

The research has an interdisciplinary orientation and will build on connections between game design, computer science, and relevant social sciences. The postdoc's main responsibilities will include technical development, empirical and design work related to the digitalization of cultural heritage, as well as studies of shared interactions in immersive media.

This project is located in an interdisciplinary research group with extensive international collaborations. The postdoc is expected to present their work at international forums and in journals, as well as collaborate with colleagues at Stockholms universitet and other institutions in the Stockholm region.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for employment as a postdoc, a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a relevant doctoral degree is required. The degree must be obtained no later than when the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is meritorious if the doctoral degree or equivalent was obtained at most three years before the last application date. If there are special reasons, an earlier obtained degree may also be considered meritorious. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, service within the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Upon appointment, special weight will be placed on research ability, and great weight will be placed on personal competence. The following criteria will be used for the candidates:

Research competence: A list of merits showing excellence in the areas of game design, computer science, and immersive technologies. Independence: Ability to formulate original research ideas and conduct research independently within the areas of game design, computer science, and immersive technologies. Collaborative activities: Ability to work as part of a team and evidence of active engagement in collaborative research projects. Communication skills: Ability to fluently communicate research ideas and results in both written results and oral presentations at conference venues.

Candidates for this position must have passed step 1 and step 2 in the Digital Futures postdoc fellowships evaluation during the spring of 2026.

About the employment

The employment is intended to be full-time and is valid until further notice, however at least two years and at most three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Commencement 2027-02-01 or by agreement.
