Research Engineer in Medical Image Analysis and Machine Learning
Fysikum is one of the largest institutions within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University, featuring a dynamic and international research environment. This position is located at the Department of Medical Radiation Physics, where we conduct leading research in medical imaging, radiation physics, and artificial intelligence for oncological applications. More information about us can be found at: Fysikum - Stockholms universitet .
Responsibilities
The Research Engineer will architect, further develop, and manage a high-performance, container-based computing platform dedicated to medical data analysis and artificial intelligence workflows. This role includes designing and deploying scalable MLOps pipelines for automated model training, experiment tracking, and clinical inference, as well as managing the orchestration of Kubernetes clusters, distributed storage systems, and GPU resource allocation in multi-tenant environments. Central technical responsibilities include integrating infrastructure for health data, such as DICOM servers, PACS interfaces, and web-based visualization tools, as well as developing pipelines for active learning and interactive annotation interfaces for human-in-the-loop validation. The engineer will also build secure RESTful APIs and backend microservices, implement identity and access management (IAM) protocols in accordance with healthcare data protection standards, and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines for testing and deployment to ensure the platform's operational reliability and robustness.
At the intersection of computing technology and healthcare, the engineer will work in close collaboration with data scientists, biomedical engineers, and clinicians. The role involves translating complex clinical needs and research requirements into robust software specifications, directly enabling the deployment and prospective evaluation of groundbreaking AI models in clinical workflows. Furthermore, the engineer will monitor cluster performance, optimize computational workloads, and provide practical technical support and onboarding for researchers and clinical users.
Qualifications
The candidate must hold an advanced degree (Master's or Master of Science in Engineering) in computer science, software engineering, or a related quantitative field. Basic eligibility requirements include very good knowledge of Linux environments and programming in Python, documented practical experience in container management and orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes, backend and API development (RESTful services and database integration), and established software development workflows with Git. Very good communication skills in English, both oral and written, and a strong ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment alongside engineers and clinicians are required.
Meritorious qualifications include practical experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, medical imaging standards (DICOM, NIfTI), as well as imaging servers and visualization tools (Orthanc, PACS, 3D Slicer). Familiarity with medical AI frameworks and MLOps pipelines (PyTorch, MONAI, MLflow, Kubeflow), experience with CI/CD and GitOps tools (ArgoCD, Ansible), and knowledge of security and authentication protocols (Keycloak, OIDC) for handling sensitive health data are also meritorious.
About the Employment
The employment is full-time and is a fixed-term position for 5 months, with the possibility of extension (up to a total of 7–8 months depending on project funding). Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Commencement as soon as possible by agreement.
