Researcher in aerosols and extreme precipitation
The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education concerning the atmosphere, the ocean, and physics-based climate science. MISU offers educational programs at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans relevant to weather and climate. We strive for a broad research activity within our scientific field.
We study issues ranging from the deep sea to the upper atmosphere and from the tropics to the poles. In our research, we utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interaction with observations. Additionally, the department develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and ground-based instruments.
MISU has approximately 60 employees and is part of a larger research environment that includes the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, Baltic Sea Centre, and Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department has a strong international character; over half of the staff have a background outside of Sweden, and both Swedish and English are used as working languages. We welcome and value diversity in our working environment. Please visit the Department of Meteorology's website for more information about us.
Project description
Aerosol particles in the atmosphere play an important role in cloud formation and for the Earth's radiation balance. In this project, linked to the EU project CERTAINTY, we study how the interaction between aerosol particles and clouds manifests in changes in both precipitation patterns as well as the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation. We will primarily use high-resolution simulations in the project.
Tasks
In this project, you will conduct research on the role of aerosol particles in precipitation patterns and extreme precipitation, primarily through the analysis of global high-resolution simulations with the climate model ICON, but the research may also include the analysis of observations and other models.
Eligibility requirements
A researcher is primarily employed for research and must have obtained a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree.
Assessment criteria
The doctoral degree must be in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant subject. The degree must be obtained no later than when the employment decision is made. Upon appointment, particular weight will be attached to scientific proficiency within the field of employment. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to have excellent oral and written skills in English.
About the employment
The employment is intended to be full-time and is time-limited to a maximum of 12 months. Commencement 2026-10-01 or as agreed.
