Senior Researcher in Environmental Chemistry and Arctic Environment
Do you want to join NILU in shaping the future of Arctic environmental research!
NILU is seeking a senior researcher to strengthen and further develop our research with a focus on the Arctic environment linked to environmental chemistry, pollutants, new environmentally and health-hazardous substances, and advanced data analysis. We are looking for an experienced, academically ambitious, and collaborative researcher who can complement and further develop our professional profile.
We are looking for you who are motivated by developing research ideas for externally funded projects, establishing collaborations, as well as providing new knowledge that is useful for society and the environment. Together with colleagues at NILU and our partners at Framsenteret, you will contribute to shaping the future of Arctic environmental research and further develop the institute's project portfolio.
About NILU in Tromsø
NILU is a member of Framsenteret – Norway's leading center for climate and environmental research in the north. The co-location provides unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, shared infrastructure, and the development of large national and international research initiatives.
The Tromsø section is part of NILU's research department Environmental Chemistry and Health. Here we have specialized expertise in environmental chemical analyses, pollutants, microplastics, Arctic environmental research, as well as the transport, transformation, and effects of pollution. We have modern laboratories, including cleanroom facilities.
About the position
You will be a central driving force in strengthening NILU's long-term research capacity in Tromsø. You will do this by developing competitive research projects, establishing strategic collaborations, and increasing the externally funded project portfolio.
The work takes place in close collaboration with environmental chemists, laboratory engineers, environmental data scientists, toxicologists, biologists, and other researchers at NILU and Framsenteret.
As an independent research institute, NILU funds the majority of its research through national and international competition for external research funding. The role therefore combines scientific quality with the ability to develop collaborations and build competitive research projects.
This is a permanent position reporting to the section leader in NILU Tromsø.
Tasks
- develop and lead competitive research applications
- lead and participate in research projects and work packages
- establish and further develop collaborations nationally and internationally
- collaborate closely with researchers and laboratory environments in Tromsø and Kjeller
- analyze, publish, and communicate research results
- further develop NILU's research within environmental chemistry, pollutants, environmental monitoring, and Arctic environmental challenges
- strengthen NILU's professional visibility and collaboration in Framsenteret and more
- contribute to an ambitious and inclusive research environment
Qualification requirements
To strengthen and further develop our research and add new professional perspectives, we want applicants with competence in environmental chemistry or related fields. This may include, among others;
- environmental and analytical chemistry, pollutants, new environmentally and health-hazardous substances, non-target or suspect screening, or microplastics
- Arctic environmental research, environmental monitoring, trend analyses, exposure and fate modeling, or risk assessment
- environmental data science, such as cheminformatics, biostatistics, machine learning, or artificial intelligence applied to environmental research
- ecotoxicology, ecology, in silico modeling, research at the intersection of research and management, or other user-involved research
The list is intended as a guide – not a checklist. We do not expect one candidate to cover all areas. The most important thing for us is that you have high professional competence, enjoy collaboration, and are able to develop good research ideas into competitive research projects.
We are looking for you who have;
- a PhD in a relevant field
- documented experience with competitive research applications and obtaining external funding
- experience with project management or coordination of research activities
- a solid scientific publication list
- good written and oral English skills
- ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams
National and/or international networks, experience from laboratory-based environmental research, as well as knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, is an advantage.
Personal qualities
We are looking for a colleague who:
- has scientific curiosity, energy, and the ability to execute
- is proactive, follows up, and enjoys developing ideas into concrete projects
- is motivated to develop new scientific knowledge, including application writing and project management
- enjoys collaborating across disciplines, departments, and locations
- shares competence and contributes to a good working environment
- communicates clearly with both scientific and non-scientific partners
- is comfortable taking initiative and involving others
