Embedded Software Engineer
About the company
Smart Impulse is the story of a final year project that transformed into an ambitious and committed entrepreneurial project!
In 2011, Charles and Henri, our two founders, took on the challenge of revolutionizing Energy management in buildings.
More concretely, we design and develop next-generation electrical measurement solutions with an electrical meter, the Smart X, which is easy to install (less than an hour, without tools and without power cut), allowing, from a single measurement point and patented algorithms (Nonintrusive Load Monitoring - NILM), to identify the consumption of each type of equipment in a building (lighting, heating, IT, ventilation, etc.).
The analysis of the collected data allows commercial building managers to identify savings levers and thus control and optimize energy consumption.
Today, our solutions are deployed in more than 4000 buildings across 60 countries worldwide.
Join our team of more than 60 Impulsers who participate daily in shaping the future of energy innovation!
Your tasks
THE CONTEXT In order to accelerate our growth, we are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to enable us to launch the development of the next generation of our smart meter - with the ambition of making hardware a sustainable competitive advantage for Smart Impulse.
Reporting to the Hardware Manager, within the Hardware Feature Team composed of a hands-on manager (Mathieu, your future supervisor) and an Embedded Software Engineer (Gordon), you will contribute mainly to the software development of the next generation of our meter.
Starting from a nearly blank page, the challenge will be to design a meter that offers solutions increasingly adapted to our customers' needs, aligned with market standards (self-service, metrology, cybersecurity, certifications, fleet management, etc.) and to increase the capabilities of our algorithms (Edge AI).
On a daily basis, your main missions will be the following:
Software Design
- Participate in the definition of the next generation of smart meters
- Design reliable software architectures based on your past expertise (layering, state machines, design patterns, etc.)
Embedded Software Development
- Develop the embedded software of the next generation of smart meters on microcontroller targets
- Maintain and enrich the unit tests necessary for software development quality (CI/CD, pipelines)
- Participate in intra-team technical reviews
- Occasionally participate in the support of existing products (Smart X, OpenWRT routers)
Software and Tool Development
- Contribute to the development of tools that the Feature Team makes available to other teams
- Develop the tools necessary for quality testing and the production deployment of our products (production benches)
Documentation
- Write clear internal documentation at the appropriate level of detail (README, changelog, knowledge base, Merge Request, internal communications) related to your software developments
- Follow and update the development tickets you are working on
Tools
- Development: Jira, Git/GitLab
- Monitoring and data: Grafana, Dataiku, Metabase
- LLM: Claude (Claude Code), CodeRabbit (code review)
Technologies
- Hardware targets: ARM MCU, STM32, ESP
- Embedded development: C/C++, Rust, ESP-IDF, Python
- Real-time: FreeRTOS
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi/LAN, 4G
- Tool/script languages: Python / Bash
- Backend: Python (Django)
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Master's degree or higher, engineering school or university track
- You have a minimum of 5 years of experience and can demonstrate successful experience in embedded software development on microcontroller targets, ideally in a start-up/scale-up environment
- You know how to write software technical specifications from a functional framework carried out by our Hardware Product Manager
- You know how to architect your software developments (layer-by-layer breakdown, drivers, state machines, etc.) and are able to put your expertise to use for quality software
- You are familiar with development methods such as Test Driven Development (TDD) and ideally have experience in developing virtual tests through emulation (QEMU) and Hardware-in-the-loop simulation
- You know the specific drivers of real-time development (concurrency management, asynchronous programming, interrupts, DMA, etc.) and have a solid understanding of the functioning and peripherals of a microcontroller (RAM/FLASH constraints, SPI, UART, etc.) as well as certain fieldbuses (Ethernet, Modbus, etc.)
- You have good knowledge of computer networks and cybersecurity (encryption, secure boot, etc.)
- You make good use of AI code assistance tools
- Ideally, you have good knowledge of Linux and web APIs
- You have good communication skills (oral and written) for effective collaboration
- You speak and write professional English
Soft Skills
- You are solution and innovation-oriented and are naturally proactive
- You are autonomous, methodical, organized, and rigorous; you have a taste for doing things well
- A true team player, you know how to collaborate and lead projects in a team, with a positive, enthusiastic, and benevolent mindset
- You are committed to continuous training to stay up to date on industry trends and new technologies
