The Role
As a Mechanical Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining, fault-finding, repairing and servicing rolling stock passenger vehicles to ensure they remain safe, reliable and available for service. You'll work within a skilled engineering team carrying out planned and reactive maintenance activities, following strict safety and quality procedures. This is a fantastic opportunity for engineers looking to transfer existing mechanical knowledge into a new industry through a structured training and development programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine maintenance, servicing and repairs on rolling stock vehicles
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical and basic electrical faults
- Conduct vehicle examinations in line with maintenance instructions
- Inspect and maintain braking systems, wheelsets, pneumatics and mechanical assemblies
- Complete fault-finding investigations and produce detailed reports
- Rectify in-service running defects
- Accurately complete job cards, service sheets and maintenance documentation
- Ensure all work is completed safely and to the highest quality standards
- Liaise with stores and parts departments to obtain required components
- Operate lifting equipment and powered plant where required
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the maintenance facility
- Maintain excellent housekeeping standards
- Assist with coaching and supporting colleagues where appropriate
- Identify and report health and safety concerns
What We're Looking For
Essential
- NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in a Mechanical Engineering discipline
- Practical mechanical maintenance experience
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work safely in a regulated engineering environment
- Good communication and team-working skills

This position operates on a rotating shift pattern:
Day Shift 06:45 - 18:15 Night Shift 18:45 - 06:15
Breaks Included:
- Two 15-minute breaks
- One 30-minute meal break
Split Shift:
- Wednesday & Thursday Days
- Friday to Sunday Nights
- Followed by 4 Days Off
- Days Shift Friday to Sunday Days
- Followed by 5 Days Off
- Nights Shift Monday to Thursday Nights
- Followed by 5 Days Off
- Then the cycle repeats.
