The Senate Sergeant at Arms is seeking a Media Gallery Deputy Director. Major duties

Provides leadership and directly oversees daily operation; trains, supervises, and evaluates the work of gallery staff. Discusses and resolves media coverage, credentialing, and pooling issues. Advises gallery members on Senate (and House, where applicable) operations such as scheduling, floor procedure, committee structure and jurisdiction, and parliamentary procedure. Assists with planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing media arrangements for quadrennial presidential nominating conventions, presidential inaugurations, presidential debates, State of the Union addresses, and other joint sessions of Congress or special events. Works with all Media Galleries, Doorkeepers, and Capitol Police to ensure press and others attending media events maintain a safe working environment; coordinates assignments to press conferences. Reviews membership applications, contacts directors, editors, and publishers of new applying organizations, prepares written evaluations, and makes recommendations to the Media Gallery Director. Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Other Duties/ Responsibilities Serves as Director in his/her absence. Required Work Experience Five to eight years of related experience. Required Special Skills/ Knowledge Knowledge of, or ability to learn, current political events and Senate and/or House parliamentary procedure. Ability to provide accurate responses to media inquiries. Ability to coordinate and facilitate the logistics of media events. Ability to maintain records and prepare summaries of events. Ability to direct, supervise, and evaluate gallery staff. Ability to communicate effectively. As part of our hiring process, we may conduct a skills assessment to better understand an applicant’s proficiency in key areas relevant to the role. Desired Qualifications Familiarity with press photographer requirements to facilitate and support coverage of events, hearings and press conferences. Familiarity with the rules and procedures of the Senate and House of Representatives. Established, or the ability to build, relationships with Senators’ and Committees’ press staff. Working Conditions Sedentary. May sometimes be required to work long hours. Extended periods of standing may be required. Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late-night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted. This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during a lapse in appropriations, in inclement weather, on holidays, weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption.
