Senior Software Developer

£55,000 - £65,000 Chesterfeild - hybrid (2-3 days per week on-site) SQL Server, T-SQL, Microsoft Access, VBA

THE ROLE

A hands-on Senior Software Developer is needed to join a small in-house development team supporting a bespoke, business-critical system. You'll learn the platform from the people who built it, strengthen and extend it, and play a key part in shaping how it evolves as the business plans its next steps.

My client is a well-established, successful business whose operations run on an in-house system built on SQL Server with a Microsoft Access front end. They're investing in their technology team and taking a pragmatic approach to modernisation: keep what works, improve it steadily, and decide the future direction with the right people on board.

THE SENIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER ROLE

• Develop, support and enhance a complex SQL Server-backed system with a Microsoft Access front end
• Write and optimise T-SQL, including stored procedures, views and queries
• Maintain and extend Access/VBA code across a large existing codebase
• Build a deep understanding of the system, working closely with the Head of Systems and the wider team
• Contribute ideas on how the platform should be modernised over time
• Bring good development practice to the team, such as source control, documentation and testing

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Strong commercial experience with SQL Server and T-SQL
• Commercial experience with Microsoft Access and VBA
• Confident working in a large, complex existing codebase
• A pragmatic approach to legacy systems, improving what's there rather than rewriting from scratch
• Experience with other languages or platforms (e.g. C#/.NET, Python) would be a strong advantage
