Algorithm Engineer - Radar Tracking (m/f/d)
Introduction We are smartmicro, the leading specialist for high-performance automotive and traffic radar as well as radar/camera hybrid sensor technology. We design, develop, and manufacture high-tech sensors for autonomous driving, intelligent traffic infrastructure, and Smart Cities. Our mission is to make roads safer, enable autonomous driving in all weather conditions, optimize traffic flow to reduce travel times, and create more environmentally friendly, smarter cities. We are a German company with an international presence in the UK and the USA, while our headquarters for design, development, and production is located in Braunschweig. We are making the future of mobility a reality. As an expansion of our team, we are looking for an experienced Algorithm Engineer for Radar Tracking.
Your Tasks In this position, you will develop algorithms for object tracking and sensor fusion for radar/camera sensor systems used in intelligent transport systems, the Smart Mobility sector, ADAS-related applications, automated driving scenarios, and airborne radar applications. You will develop, implement, and validate algorithms for multi-target tracking, sensor fusion, and statistical signal processing. You will deal with advanced tracking approaches such as extended object tracking, Bernoulli filters, Kalman filters, Bayesian filtering, probabilistic data association, and related estimation methods. You will work with real radar, camera, and radar/camera fusion data and analyze the performance of the algorithms in realistic traffic, mobility, and airborne scenarios. You will translate algorithmic concepts, prototypes, and proofs-of-concept into robust, maintainable, and testable software for product development and customer projects. You will improve the robustness, accuracy, runtime behavior, and reliability of tracking and fusion algorithms under demanding real-world conditions. You will define and use appropriate test cases, metrics, and validation methods to evaluate the quality of detection, tracking, fusion, and perception at the object level. Depending on the project, your work may contribute to applications such as intelligent traffic infrastructure, ADAS, autonomous driving, drone detection, UAV/UAS tracking, and airborne radar systems. You will work closely with the Embedded Software, Systems Engineering, Test, and Product Development teams to ensure reliable integration into our sensor platforms. Your work will contribute to safety-critical and high-performance radar applications, for example, by improving traffic flow, protecting vulnerable road users, and enabling robust radar-based perception in aviation use cases.
Your Strengths We are looking for an engineer with demonstrable professional experience in algorithm development, not just an academic background. You have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Mathematics, or a comparable technical field. You have several years of full-time professional experience in industrial or commercial algorithm/software development after graduation (internships, theses, student jobs, and purely university projects are not considered for this requirement). You have practical experience in at least one of the following areas: Multi-Object Tracking, sensor fusion, radar tracking, object-level fusion, non-linear state estimation, statistical signal processing, perception algorithms, or probabilistic methods. You are proficient in programming with Python and C or C++ and can write structured, maintainable, and testable code. You have solid mathematical foundations, especially in the areas of linear algebra, statistics, probability theory, estimation theory, and filtering methods. Experience with radar systems, camera systems, vehicle sensors, ADAS, autonomous driving, intelligent transport systems, embedded systems, real-time applications, drone tracking, UAV/UAS applications, airborne radar, or radar altimeters is a great advantage. Knowledge of tracking methods such as Kalman filters, EKF, UKF, particle filters, JPDA, MHT, Bernoulli filters, PHD filters, or Extended Object Tracking is an advantage. You are able to independently analyze complex technical problems and translate your findings into reliable software solutions. You work in a structured and result-oriented manner and can balance technical quality with project-related specifications. You communicate clearly in English.
