Are you an experienced Document Controller with a background in engineering, manufacturing or turnkey project delivery? Do you have strong technical document management skills and the confidence to take a lead role in maintaining standards, supporting project teams and developing best practice? We are working with a specialist engineering business operating in a technically demanding, project-led environment. They are looking to appoint a Lead Document Controller to act as the business's subject matter expert for document control, overseeing consistent processes across projects and programmes while remaining actively involved in the day-to-day delivery of project documentation. Offering an excellent salary package, hybrid working and the choice of Wolverhampton or Warrington as your base, this is an opportunity to combine hands-on technical document control with team leadership and continuous improvement.

The Role

Reporting to the Projects Delivery Director, you will take responsibility for the effective management of document control activities across the business. Around 90% of your time will be spent supporting nominated projects, with the remainder focused on leading the Document Control function, developing colleagues and improving processes. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Project Document Control: Managing the receipt, issue, distribution, review and approval of project documentation, ensuring accurate records and efficient information flow between internal teams, clients and suppliers.
  • Document Management Systems : Setting up and maintaining project systems using Autodesk Vault or similar DMS platforms, ensuring documentation is correctly recorded, controlled and accessible.
  • Engineering Documentation: Managing technical documents and engineering drawings, maintaining revision control, document registers, transmittals and fully auditable records.
  • Compliance and Quality : Ensuring project teams follow established document control procedures and contractual requirements, conducting spot audits and maintaining appropriate project archives.
  • Client Systems: Coordinating documentation through client-specific document management systems where required, alongside the company's primary system.
  • Team Leadership : Providing day-to-day leadership, guidance and mentoring to Document Controllers, reviewing workloads, supporting performance development and ensuring resources are effectively allocated.
  • Continuous Improvement: Reviewing procedures and work instructions, identifying opportunities to improve document control processes and supporting the implementation of approved business improvement initiatives.
  • Project Support: Working closely with Project and Programme Managers, assisting with documentation tracking, information packs, meetings and other project administration requirements.

About You

You will be an experienced Document Controller who understands the importance of accuracy, traceability, revision management and consistent document control procedures within a complex engineering environment. Ideally, you will bring:

  • Proven experience in document control within engineering, manufacturing, industrial projects or turnkey engineering environments.
  • Practical experience using Autodesk Vault or a comparable Document Management System (DMS).
  • A strong understanding of technical documentation, engineering drawings, document transmittals, approval workflows and version control.
  • Experience maintaining auditable records and working to formal quality procedures and contractual requirements.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Excellent organisation, communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
  • The confidence to work with engineers, project teams, clients and senior stakeholders while promoting consistent working practices.
  • Experience within highly regulated or safety-critical sectors, particularly nuclear or defence, would be a significant advantage. Previous experience supervising, mentoring or managing other Document Controllers would also be beneficial, although a strong technical Document Controller ready to step into a leadership position will be considered.
