Deputy Director (m/f/d) of the University Library Bochum

As part of the campus-wide library system, the University Library (UB) Bochum provides central services for research, teaching, and studies at the RUB. Its central tasks include supplying the university with (digital) media and information as an essential basis for studies, teaching, and research, as well as supporting scientific publishing. In the course of filling the above-mentioned position, the existing business areas of Media Processing and Publication Services are to be merged. In the new "Media and Publication Services" business area, responsibility will be taken for the campus-wide supply of electronic media (journals, e-books, databases) and the management of the UB's printed media. Furthermore, the Open Access transformation agreements as well as the Open Access publication funds of the RUB will be coordinated, and publication infrastructures will be provided. The promotion of Open Access is one of the central tasks.

Your tasks:

  • Representation of the Director of the University Library in the event of absence
  • Co-shaping the strategic and operational direction, organizational development, and resource allocation of the entire UB as part of the directorate
  • Conceptual, technical, and personnel overall responsibility for the merger and management of the previously organizationally separate business areas of Media Processing and Publication Services; optimization of business processes and services through process analysis and the introduction of new digital procedures and tools
  • Conceptual further development of the RUB's Open Access strategy in coordination with the university management
  • Responsibility for the acquisition strategy of the UB and the campus-wide acquisition coordination of digital media
  • Responsibility for determining and coordinating the central information budget of the RUB as well as for the strategic use of the UB's media, publication, and third-party fund budgets
  • Acquisition of third-party funds in the field of Open Access (DFG), support of the RUB's Open Access strategy by accompanying research projects with regard to Open Access practices
  • Active participation in scientific conferences, especially on the topic of Open Access and Open Science; establishment and maintenance of cooperations within and outside the RUB
  • Supervision of humanities subject departments

Your profile:

  • Successfully completed university degree in the humanities (MA or comparable) in connection with the qualification for the higher service at scientific libraries or a comparable qualification (e.g., Master's degree program in Library and Information Science)
  • Holding an office of at least salary grade A 14
  • Many years of management experience in the areas of publication services / Open Access and acquisition in a university library with comprehensive expertise in the fields of personnel management and organizational development
  • Proven, many years of professional experience in managing innovation processes at a large university library in the context of the task area of Open Access transformation (development of financing models, introduction and establishment of publication infrastructures, promotion of Diamond Open Access)
  • Proven success in securing third-party funds and implementing third-party fund projects in the field of Open Access
  • Very good knowledge of Germany-wide developments in the areas of Open Access transformation and information budget
  • Experience with monitoring the publication output and publication costs of a university and the associated processes
  • Very good knowledge and practical experience with the introduction and provision of publication infrastructures (repositories, OJS, OMP) and the legal framework
  • Good knowledge in the task areas of acquisition, collection development, and electronic invoicing processes; very good knowledge and practical experience in electronic media license management
  • High system librarian competence for the evaluation and conceptual (further) development of digital tools in the task area
  • Experience in participating in regional and supra-regional working groups on the mentioned topics
  • Several years of experience in designing events for knowledge transfer within the framework of subject departments as well as in the field of Open Access
  • Strong communication and leadership skills as well as strong teamwork skills
  • Extensive, professionally relevant training and the willingness to continue targeted training as well as participation in conferences/congresses in the field of Open Access
  • Very good English skills
