Respiratory Therapist Requirements: Experience performing spirometry testing Current state licensure as a Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification and/or Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) preferred; AARC Office Spirometry Certificate also accepted Valid Driver’s License BLS/CPR Certification Professionalism and strong interpersonal communication skills Self-motivated with the ability to work independently Pass all necessary health requirements for hospital employment, including drug screen and background check Comfort level with spirometry and pre- and post-bronchodilator pulmonary function testing. Availability for occasional weekday shifts (no weekends) Ability to use mobile phone devices & applications
Other Requirements: Knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology to accurately perform pulmonary function testing. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Must be able to act calmly and effectively in busy, stressful or emergency situations. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing. Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.
Skills: Ability to operate spirometry and pulmonary function testing equipment. Knowledge of respiratory equipment and medications. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to work independently with minimal to no supervision. Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff at client facilities, management and peers. Maintain the mental acuity, situational awareness, and decision-making ability necessary to safely and effectively perform all essential duties of the Respiratory Therapist position, including patient assessment, testing, prioritization, and communication with the care team. Demonstrate the physical capability to safely lift and move 30 pounds independently and to assist with patient positioning, transfer, and mobility activities as required to perform pulmonary function testing safely and effectively. (see physical requirements) Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage interactions with people in difficult, stressful situations. Excellent communication skills.
Physical Requirements: Prolonged standing and walking while performing testing and moving between patient rooms and departments. Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, and repositioning patients. Occasional squatting, kneeling, and working in confined or awkward spaces. Lifting and carrying equipment, supplies, and testing accessories. Pushing and pulling testing equipment, wheelchairs, and other medical equipment. Assisting with patient transfers and positioning, including patients with limited mobility. Frequent use of hands, wrists, and fingers for operating equipment, fine-motor tasks, and documentation. Continuous visual concentration while operating equipment and monitoring patient effort and test results. Physical endurance to perform multiple tests throughout the workday. Ability to safely maneuver around patients, equipment, and other obstacles.
Responsibilities: Perform spirometry and comprehensive pulmonary function tests (PFTs), including pre- and post-bronchodilator testing, in accordance with accepted protocols. Administer albuterol for post-bronchodilator pulmonary function testing. Provide clear instructions to patients on preparing for and completing pulmonary function tests, and educate patients on the proper use of respiratory equipment such as inhalers and nebulizers. Monitor patient comfort and equipment functionality throughout testing. Communicate effectively with the Pulmonologist and care team as needed. Follow prescribed safety standards in operating equipment. Maintain a safe, clean work area in compliance with client’s standards. Maintain accurate records, reports and files, as directed. Document work processes, as required. Perform other duties, as assigned.
