Marine Engineering Officer

Reed on behalf of Transport for London are seeking a skilled Marine Engineering Officer responsible for the technical upkeep of vessels and river terminal assets at the Woolwich Ferry.

This role involves providing first-line mobile technical and engineering support for vessels and plant, including remote monitoring control systems and routine, planned, and unplanned maintenance, also manage the rostered technical team for any given shift.

Hourly Rate: £31.31 PAYE or £63.1 Umbrella Location: Woolwich Ferry, London, SE18 Job Type: 37 hours per week

Day-to-day of the role:

• Monitor the running vessels' performance to provide safety assurances to the Captain to proceed with start/shutdown and offer technical support and guidance throughout the vessels’ running time in the event of automation deviations in vessel propulsion, linkspans, and auto-mooring, and the re-setting of alarms.
• Provide first-line response in the event of any technical issues, requiring interrogation of the appropriate control systems, undertake physical inspections, identify cause and make sound technical recommendations for rectification; liaison with 3rd party support services.
• Maintain a close working relationship with other departments within Woolwich Ferry and TfL; manage 2nd tier contractors/consultant/external resources as/when required, in line with budget, to ensure works are completed to standard.
• Conduct periodic checks and adhere to all routine maintenance requirements in accordance with the planned maintenance system and coordinate necessary resources for the timely completion of planned and unplanned maintenance under the direction of the Marine Engineering Manager.
• Assist with managing the preparation of vessels for dry dock and major special works and supervise externally contracted engineering works for the timely completion and quality assurance.
• Ensure adherence to technical standards in accordance with best practice, technical operating procedures, class, and statutory regulations.
• Line managing responsibilities for a team of AEO; roster management, provide training, mentoring, and competence assessment of the team and other operatives where applicable.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Holds an Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), unlimited STCW 111/1 Certificate of Competence or preferably higher Certificate of Competency issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, or other recognised marine regulatory authority.
• Qualified Marine Engineer, with HND in Marine / Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
• Proficient in Marine Safety Management Systems and regulatory safety requirements.
• Strong technical analytical and fault-finding skills.
• Leadership skills and strong organisational and planning capabilities.
• Engineering and mechanical workshop skills.
• Ability to write technical reports and strong IT & computer literacy skills.
• Ability to use Planned Maintenance Software and coach and guide at all levels.

Experience:

• Extensive experience in Marine Engineering.
• Team & supplier performance supervision & quality control.
• Electrical, electronic, and control engineering.
• Remote monitoring, fault diagnostic & resolution.
• Maintenance and repair.
• Hybrid integrated power generation and propulsion management systems.
• Experience with diesel electric frequency drive propulsion system preferably with DC bus bar.
