Primary SEN Tutor - Therapeutic & Academic Provision

Location: Near Millfield Primary School area Hours: Up to 15 hours per week (Afternoons) Start Date: September (ASAP)

About the Role

We are seeking a patient, consistent, and highly skilled SEN Tutor to deliver 1-to-1 therapeutic and academic support for a primary pupil during afternoon sessions. The pupil is currently on a reduced timetable and requires a supportive bridge to build learning resilience, emotional regulation, and confidence.

You will work closely with the pupil near their home/school environment, delivering chunked academic learning alongside therapeutic and sensory strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver tailored 1-to-1 instruction in primary English and Maths (working pre-ELG/Reception level for Literacy and Year 2 level for Maths).
• Adapt all written materials to meet visual impairment guidelines (printing resources on yellow paper and using enlarged fonts).
• Implement sensory integration strategies, including running sensory circuits to assist with emotional regulation.
• Provide structured, scaffolded learning using concrete resources and high levels of overlearning to aid retention.
• Adapt communication styles to support delayed receptive and expressive language by using simple language, visual aids, and extra processing time.
• Maintain clear, consistent boundaries while involving the pupil in decision-making to build a trusting relationship.
• Utilise short, bite-sized learning modules (e.g., 10-15 minute tasks) to support low attention spans and build self-esteem.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Experience: Proven track record of tutoring primary-aged pupils with complex SEN needs, including Autism, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties, and high anxiety.
• Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to adapt language for pupils with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
• Behavior & SEMH: Experience managing emotional dysregulation, sensory-seeking behaviors, and flight responses using positive reinforcement and clear boundaries.
• Visual Impairment Awareness: Ability to follow guidance from visual impairment specialists to adapt learning materials.
• Background: A background in youth work, therapeutic education, or primary SEN teaching is strongly preferred.
• DBS: Enhanced Child Workforce DBS check registered on the Update Service (or willing to obtain one).
