Structural Steel Fitter – Layout & Fabrication Location: Richmond, VA Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire Shifts: 1st & 2nd Shift Available Pay: Up to $28.00/hour + $3.00/hour shift differential for 2nd shift Position Overview Hiring an experienced Structural Steel Fitter for a fabrication shop environment. This role involves steel layout, material preparation, fit-up, alignment, and assembly while maintaining accurate dimensions and quality standards.

Responsibilities Review blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications before starting work.

Perform steel layout, fitting, positioning, and assembly .

Measure and mark materials according to drawing dimensions.

Prepare structural steel components for fabrication and fit-up.

Position, align, and secure parts to achieve proper assembly.

Set up and operate fabrication machinery and shop equipment, including a track torch .

Check measurements and component placement throughout the fabrication process.

Verify that assemblies meet required dimensions, alignment, and fit-up specifications.

Examine completed work for quality, accuracy, and workmanship.

Work with supervisors and other shop employees to maintain production schedules.

Keep tools, materials, and work areas organized.

Follow all applicable shop safety procedures and production requirements.

Qualifications Previous experience with structural steel fitting, layout, or fabrication .

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings .

Hands-on experience fitting, aligning, positioning, and assembling structural steel.

Ability to set up and operate a track torch .

Working knowledge of welding methods, fabrication machinery, and common shop tools.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, quality work.

Ability to work productively as part of a team.

Commitment to maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

AWS or other welding certifications are a plus.
