By 3–5 PQE, you should have a pretty good idea of the Private Client work you enjoy. The question is whether your current role gives you enough of it. I've got an opportunity with an established Sunderland firm for a 3–5 PQE Private Client Solicitor who wants greater ownership over their work and their development.

The role is deliberately broad, covering Wills, Probate, LPAs, Court of Protection, estate administration and contentious estates, alongside advising a client base that includes business owners, property investors and professionals. The important bit is that you're not simply inheriting somebody else's caseload and being told what to work on. There's scope to shape your own workload around the areas where you have the strongest interest and experience, while continuing to broaden your technical skill set.

At this level, I'd expect you to be:

• Running your own Private Client caseload with confidence
• Comfortable dealing directly with clients and managing relationships
• Able to handle matters with relatively little supervision
• Technically strong across the core areas of Private Client
• Interested in taking on more complex work
• Commercially aware and interested in developing your own profile within the team

The firm also takes a slightly different approach to fee earning. You're not expected to account for every six minutes of your day. There are financial targets, but the focus is on quality work, client relationships and building a sustainable practice. For someone at 3–5 PQE, there's plenty of runway to develop before you even need to start thinking about the more senior side of the proposition.
