Database Engineer

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of the Team Leader or Development Department Manager, designs, develops, optimizes, and maintains database systems for web and mobile applications in accordance with the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Design, develop, and maintain database schemas and related database structures for company applications based on project requirements and approved system designs.
2. Improve and optimize existing database designs to support system scalability, maintainability, reliability, and performance.
3. Benchmark, analyze, and optimize database queries to ensure efficient data access and overall application performance.
4. Develop and maintain high-performance stored procedures, functions, triggers, and other database objects where required.
5. Manage, maintain, and improve clustered, replicated, or high-availability database environments.
6. Provide database expertise in support of system testing, troubleshooting, deployment, and performance validation activities.
7. Investigate, analyze, and resolve database-related issues affecting application stability, performance, integrity, or availability.
8. Monitor database performance, health, and stability, and take corrective or preventive action where necessary.
9. Prepare and maintain technical documentation related to database design, development, optimization, configuration, and operational procedures.
10. Design and implement backup, archival, migration, recovery, and upgrade strategies to support business continuity and long-term maintainability.
11. Provide regular status updates in the Redmine journal or other approved project management tools to communicate analysis results, work progress, blockers, and current task status.
12. Investigate, analyze, and resolve reported database-related bugs or issues in company systems. Where technical debt is identified in the affected area, it must also be assessed and addressed as part of the work. If the issue or related technical debt may affect another module, escalate the matter to SAAD for confirmation.
13. Demonstrate a proactive mindset by identifying technical debt and taking ownership of initiatives to modernize, improve, and strengthen the database environment beyond the initial task requirements.
14. Conduct ongoing research on relevant and emerging database technologies, tools, and practices to help ensure the company adopts efficient, practical, and modern solutions where appropriate.
15. Participate in internal meetings, sharing sessions, and presentations when needed, while prioritizing urgent or high-priority work if attendance is not critical.
16. Participate in meetings with partners and clients only when required and when no urgent or high-priority tracker requires immediate attention. Where appropriate, such meetings may otherwise be handled by the deputy or manager.
17. Maintain the integrity of the workplace environment by complying with company policies, including but not limited to prohibitions on unauthorized downloads, use of private or unapproved code, and handling of unauthorized private or sensitive data.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
• At least 2 years of professional experience in database engineering, database administration, or software development involving substantial database responsibilities
• At least 2 years of experience with MySQL or MariaDB
• At least 1 year of experience managing clustered, replicated, or high-availability MySQL or MariaDB environments
• At least 1 year of experience handling high-performance or large-scale databases, such as partitioned tables or high-volume transactional workloads
• Strong knowledge of database schema design, normalization, indexing, and query optimization
• Experience developing stored procedures, functions, triggers, or other database programming objects
• Experience monitoring and troubleshooting database performance and stability
• Experience designing backup, recovery, migration, and upgrade strategies

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Experience with Percona tools or Percona-based database environments would be an advantage
• Experience working with PostgreSQL would be an advantage
• Experience with big data technologies would be an advantage
• Experience with Cassandra or other distributed database systems would be an advantage
• Experience using Redmine for project tracking and coordination would be an advantage
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, interruption-driven environment would be an advantage
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail would be an advantage
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively would be an advantage
• Good English communication skills, both written and verbal, would be an advantage
