Measuring art "Made in Germany" - that is what the approx. 2100 employees of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) stand for. As a national metrology institute and leading research institution, we develop world-leading standards for measurement in an international working environment. In this way, we ensure that people and organizations can trust measurements.

In Braunschweig, we are looking for you for Department 4.4 "Time and Frequency" as:

Doctoral Candidate (m/f/d) Physics

Pay group 13 TVöD Bund ○ temporary for 3 years ○ part-time 33.15 hours per week In the research group 4.43 "Optical clocks with stored ions", the isotope 173Yb+ is to be further developed for use in an optical clock. These investigations build on the very successful work with the isotope 171Yb+ that has been carried out for many years. For 173Yb+, a stronger coupling for the clock transition is expected due to the structure of the atomic nucleus, which would be advantageous for the optical clock. On the other hand, the larger nuclear spin also creates additional requirements for efficient cooling and state preparation. You will support us with the following activities:

Automation of clock operation for the two clock transitions of 173Yb+ Investigation of the improvement of stability through simultaneous interrogation of multiple ions, also using entanglement Development of protocols for the investigation and use of the hyperfine transitions of 173Yb+ ions Determination of systematic frequency shifts for both clock transitions, including the creation of an uncertainty budget Expansion of the existing Python-based experiment control with ARTIQ Expansion of existing laser setups Execution, evaluation, and analysis of comparison measurements with other optical clocks for the verification of the evaluated uncertainty as well as for the search for violations of the equivalence principle and other effects beyond the Standard Model Presentation of research results at international conferences and through publication in scientific journals

University degree (Diplom/Master) in the field of Physics with a "very good" grade Knowledge and experience in the following areas are an advantage: Atomphysik, Atom-Licht Wechselwirkung, Laserkühlung von Atomen, Laserspektroskopie, experimentelle Optik, automatisierte Datenerfassung, Elektronik, Programmierung Strong interest in experimental activities as well as experimental skill High level of commitment as well as independent working Strong teamwork and communication skills English skills (C1 level), German skills are an advantage Willingness to travel domestically and abroad You will conduct research in an internationally renowned team at the technological forefront of precision metrology by researching novel clock transitions of ¹⁷³Yb⁺, automating experimental systems, and developing innovative methods, such as multi-ion interrogation and entanglement, for the next generation of optical clocks. In doing so, you will benefit from the excellent infrastructure of the PTB and direct doctoral supervision by a supervisor from the PTB. Furthermore, you do not have to take on teaching duties, but can focus completely on your doctorate. Our doctoral program also offers the opportunity to network with each other as well as nationally and internationally, e.g., at scientific conferences. An overview of our other benefits can be found on our career page.

This is important to us:

The PTB promotes equality between women and men and is particularly interested in applications from women. At the same time, we strive to reflect social diversity. Therefore, every application, regardless of gender, cultural or social origin, religion, worldview, or personal identity, is warmly welcome. Severely disabled people or those equivalent to them will be considered with equal suitability...
