Our client is a well-established and growing engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke systems, special purpose machinery, and production solutions for a range of industrial sectors. Due to continued growth and a strong project pipeline, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of bespoke machinery from concept through to manufacture and commissioning. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will play a key role in delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions that meet customer requirements. This position offers the opportunity to work on varied and technically challenging projects within a collaborative and supportive team.
Key Responsibilities
- Design bespoke machinery, systems, and mechanical assemblies using 3D CAD software.
- Produce detailed engineering drawings, assembly drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Develop innovative mechanical solutions based on customer specifications and project requirements.
- Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, and design reviews.
- Collaborate with electrical, controls, manufacturing, and project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Support machine build, testing, installation, and commissioning activities.
- Liaise with customers and suppliers regarding technical requirements and project progress.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant engineering standards, health and safety requirements, and industry regulations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practices.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer position within systems, special purpose machinery, material handling, or manufacturing environments.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or similar.
- Experience producing detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, materials, fabrication, and machining processes.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work to deadlines.
- Strong communication and team-working abilities.
Desirable
- Experience designing automated production equipment or conveyor systems.
- Knowledge of pneumatics, servo systems, and motion control technologies.
- Understanding of machinery safety standards and CE/UKCA compliance.
- Experience working within project-driven engineering environments.
- Familiarity with PDM and ERP systems.
