ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is a technology solutions provider building customer experience software platforms, including queue management, appointment booking, and feedback tools, used by banking, healthcare, government, and enterprise clients across multiple African markets.

On their behalf, we are looking for a DevOps Engineer to bridge the gap between development and operations by building, automating, and maintaining reliable CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure. You will enable the engineering team to build, test, and release software faster, safer, and more efficiently, while taking ownership of the stability and security of production systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions) to automate build, test, and deployment processes.
  • Own the release process into staging and production environments, including release scheduling, versioning, and rollback procedures.
  • Provision, configure, and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
  • Containerize applications and manage orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Collaborate with development, QA, and product teams to streamline coding, testing, and release procedures.
  • Integrate DevOps practices into the Agile SDLC by participating in sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives, and embedding automated testing and deployment gates at each stage of development.
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and health using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog, or CloudWatch, and set up alerting and logging.
  • Perform root cause analysis of production incidents and implement lasting fixes to improve reliability.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to and resolve critical incidents outside business hours.
  • Automate repetitive operational tasks and configuration management to reduce manual intervention and human error.
  • Implement and enforce security best practices and compliance requirements across the development and deployment pipeline (DevSecOps), including static and dynamic application security testing (e.g. SonarQube, OWASP ZAP), container/image vulnerability scanning (e.g. Trivy, Aqua), and secrets management (e.g. HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager).
  • Manage version control workflows and branching strategies using Git.
  • Optimize cloud infrastructure for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot issues spanning multiple systems, environments, and application layers.
  • Support disaster recovery, backup, and business-continuity processes for production systems.
  • Document system architecture, deployment procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Participate in code and infrastructure reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Provide support and maintenance for existing systems and applications as needed.
  • Stay current with emerging DevOps tools, practices, and industry trends, and champion a culture of automation and continuous improvement.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Experience & Technical Background

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 2–3 years' proven experience in a DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or Infrastructure/Systems Engineering role.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar).
  • Solid, hands-on understanding of AWS; exposure to Azure or Google Cloud Platform is a plus.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
  • Practical experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong scripting/programming skills (Python, Bash/Shell) for automation.
  • Working knowledge of Linux system administration.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, DataDog, or CloudWatch.
  • Strong understanding of Git and collaborative version control workflows.
  • Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) in a deployment/operations context.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals and security best practices (DevSecOps), including exposure to SAST/DAST tools, container vulnerability scanning, and secrets management solutions.
  • A portfolio of relevant projects, certifications (e.g. AWS/Azure/GCP, Kubernetes), or previous work experience is highly desirable.

Core Competencies

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and root-cause-analysis skills.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
  • A committed, self-motivated individual able to take ownership of the role and work independently as well as in a team.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation to support production incidents outside business hours.
