Major duties

  • You will serve as a research Oceanographer within the Undersea Surveillance Systems Section (Code 7184), applying data science principles to a large-scale oceanographic data repository critical to the Maritime Surveillance Systems (MSS) program.
  • You will serve as a technical subject matter expert and will provide vital analysis and recommendations to the Section Head on emerging data technologies, formats, and their potential impact on undersea warfare modeling.
  • You will conduct basic and applied research on novel data structures, formats, and data engineering methods to ensure complex undersea datasets are optimized for tactical and scientific exploitation.
  • You will research, prototyping, and evaluating new data architectures, parsing methods, and processing workflows optimized for acoustic system performance modeling.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: The incumbent must possess specialized technical experience supporting the Maritime Surveillance Systems (MSS) program within a compartmentalized environment, applying expertise in oceanographic data science, environmental acoustics, and underway collection platforms. This includes analyzing complex survey data (e.g., ISS-60, bathymetry, and ambient noise), developing custom data processing solutions, and architecting relational databases that preserve data integrity for advanced scientific exploitation. Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5/10 grade level or NP-02 pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Managing and utilizing scientific data repositories and information management platforms (such as SharePoint); 2) Processing and analyzing diverse oceanographic and geophysical survey data (such as bathymetry, sidescan, and AUV imagery); 3) Providing technical guidance, coordinating collection operations, and making strategic data decisions within a collaborative team; and 4) Communicating complex technical information effectively, both orally and in writing. Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: A. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. or B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
