Finance Partner
Job Purpose:
Our client is seeking an experienced Finance Partner to join a growing firm providing fractional finance teams to ambitious UK SMEs, many of which are multi-entity, multi-site or growing through acquisition.
Managing a portfolio of clients, you will run the finance function for each business, working directly with the owners and their teams. The role covers supporting in-house bookkeepers, owning the month end, preparing management accounts and cash flow forecasts, and leading a monthly client meeting focused on improving profit and cash. You will also work alongside the CFO on quarterly strategy work and project activity such as acquisitions, due diligence and funding, with real autonomy and the support of the FD and wider team when needed.
The firm makes extensive use of technology, including AI and in-house built tools, to automate routine work and free the team to focus on higher-value analysis. This role would suit a commercially minded qualified accountant with a broad technical foundation who enjoys variety and fast-paced client work. As the firm grows, the role is expected to evolve to include line management responsibility.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Finance Operations, Month End & Year End
- Own the month end process for each client, maintaining a clean trial balance with all reconciliations and adjustments completed accurately.
- Prepare insightful management accounts and cash flow forecasts to drive the monthly client conversation.
- Prepare VAT returns, payroll, P11Ds and other tax submissions as required.
- Support each client’s in-house bookkeeper by reviewing their work, providing coaching and picking up transactional work where needed.
- Prepare the trial balance for year end and complete year end statutory accounts and corporation tax returns.
- Design and continuously improve each client’s finance operations and systems, from data capture through to the reporting pack.
Client Meetings & Business Insight
- Lead a monthly meeting with each client, presenting the numbers and driving a focused discussion on profit and cash improvements achievable within the next 30 days.
- Identify opportunities within the numbers, such as credit control improvements, duplicated costs, claimable tax or pricing anomalies, and turn them into concrete actions.
- Help clients build the discipline of small, consistent improvements month after month.
Senior Leadership & CFO Support
- Act as a senior member of the finance team, providing mentorship and support to colleagues on technical queries, client challenges and problem-solving.
- Support the CFO on quarterly strategy work, including budgets, rolling forecasts and strategic discussions with clients.
- Support project work including acquisitions, due diligence and funding, taking on more of this directly as knowledge develops.
Person Specification:
- Commercially minded, with a natural instinct for spotting profit and cash opportunities in the numbers.
- Confident communicator, able to hold commercial conversations with business owners and make the numbers simple, understandable and actionable.
- Decisive and comfortable working at pace with incomplete information, favouring progress and continuous improvement over perfectionism.
- Able to coach and influence people without direct line management responsibility.
- Tech-fluent and inquisitive, quick to pick up new finance systems and tools.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously across a varied client portfolio.
Experience:
- Qualified accountant.
- Previous commercial finance experience working with UK SMEs is essential.
- Strong technical knowledge across bookkeeping, reconciliations, VAT, payroll, corporation tax and dividend taxes.
- Experience handling a wide variety of finance scenarios, from cleaning up trial balances to complex reconciliations.
- Proven ability to identify profit and cash improvements, with examples of wins spotted and delivered.
- Proficient in Xero.
- Year end statutory accounts experience would be advantageous, with support available where prior experience is limited.
Hours of Work:
Monday - Friday
Work Location:
In Person
Benefits:
- 30 days holiday per year including bank holidays.
- Company pension plan.
- Personal learning and development budget to support professional growth.
- Free on-site parking.
- Paid volunteering time.
- Casual dress and regular company events.
- Opportunity to grow with the business, with scope to take on line management responsibility.
