Guided by Indigenous values of respect, humility, relationality, and community care, we provide culturally grounded services including shelter supports during extreme weather and times of crisis. Position OverviewThe Conflict Support & Safety Worker plays a key role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment within the Seven Fires Warm-Up Shelter. This ununiformed position focuses on conflict prevention, de-escalation, and relationship-based safety, rather than enforcement or traditional security practices.The worker supports guests, staff, and community members by responding calmly to safety concerns, assisting with crisis situations, and upholding shelter policies in a trauma-informed, culturally respectful, and non-judgmental manner.Key ResponsibilitiesMonitor shelter spaces to ensure the safety and well-being of guests, staff, and visitorsRespond to conflicts, disturbances, or safety concerns using verbal de-escalation and mediation techniquesIntervene early to prevent escalation while maintaining dignity and respect for all individualsSupport staff during high-stress or crisis situationsRelationship-Based EngagementBuild respectful, trusting relationships with shelter guests through calm presence and clear communicationOffer support to individuals experiencing emotional distress, substance use impacts, or mental health crisesEncourage positive behaviour and adherence to shelter guidelines without use of force whenever possibleWork in alignment with Indigenous values, teachings, and community protocolsDemonstrate understanding of intergenerational trauma, colonization, and systemic barriers impacting Indigenous peoplesSupport a harm-reduction and culturally safe environment
