Technical Team Lead
Position Summary
The Technical Team Lead is responsible for the successful execution of network and systems infrastructure projects and for the day-to-day leadership of a five-person engineering team. The role requires a strong network engineering foundation, practical knowledge of servers and VMware virtualisation, and the leadership ability to organise, guide and motivate engineers.
The successful candidate will remain technically credible and involved while ensuring that work is properly planned, assigned, monitored and completed to the required quality, schedule and customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning and Execution
- Review project scope, technical requirements, deliverables, timelines and resource needs before implementation begins.
- Develop practical implementation plans, work schedules, task assignments, milestones and escalation paths.
- Allocate work among the three Network Engineers and two Systems Engineers according to their skills, experience, workload and development needs.
- Conduct project kick-off and regular progress meetings, track dependencies and take early action when delivery is at risk.
- Coordinate with the sales, solutions, project, procurement and service teams to ensure smooth project handover and execution.
- Ensure that testing, change control, customer acceptance, documentation and project closure are completed properly.
- Provide clear progress updates to management and promptly escalate major technical, resource, commercial or customer issues.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical direction and hands-on guidance for network infrastructure projects involving routing, switching, wireless, firewalls, VPNs and related technologies.
- Support the team on systems infrastructure matters, including physical and virtual servers, storage, backup, Microsoft environments and VMware virtualisation.
- Review proposed designs, configurations, implementation plans and troubleshooting approaches to ensure they are secure, supportable and aligned with good engineering practices.
- Lead or support the resolution of complex technical issues and major project escalations.
- Ensure engineers maintain accurate network diagrams, configuration records, implementation documents, test results and handover documentation.
- Promote standard methods, reusable checklists and lessons learned to improve project quality and efficiency.
People and Team Leadership
- Lead the engineering team with clear priorities, consistent communication and a supportive, accountable working environment.
- Set expectations for each engineer, explain the purpose and desired outcome of assigned work, and follow up without unnecessary micromanagement.
- Coach engineers through regular one-to-one discussions, project reviews and constructive feedback.
- Motivate the team by recognising good performance, involving engineers in problem-solving and providing appropriate opportunities to take ownership.
- Understand individual strengths and development gaps, and recommend training, certification, mentoring and project exposure.
- Manage workload fairly, watch for excessive pressure or disengagement, and take practical steps to support team wellbeing and sustained performance.
- Address performance, conduct or teamwork issues early, fairly and professionally, escalating to management when necessary.
- Build cooperation between Network and Systems Engineers and encourage knowledge sharing across both disciplines.
Service Quality and Customer Management
- Maintain professional communication with customers throughout project delivery and manage expectations clearly.
- Ensure work is completed safely, securely and with minimal disruption to customer operations.
- Review customer feedback, recurring incidents and project lessons, then implement improvements with the team.
- Support technical presentations, site surveys, solution validation and presales discussions when required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Network Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of relevant infrastructure engineering experience, including several years in a senior engineer, project lead or team lead capacity.
- Strong hands-on experience in enterprise networking, preferably with Cisco or comparable technologies.
- Good working knowledge of server infrastructure and VMware virtualisation; familiarity with Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, storage and backup is advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience planning and delivering infrastructure implementation or migration projects.
- Relevant certifications such as CCNP, VMware VCP, Microsoft or equivalent are advantageous but practical capability and leadership maturity are equally important.
