Naturhistoriska riksmuseet is Sweden's largest museum and a leading research institution where curiosity meets science. We are a government agency that increases knowledge about and interest in nature and the world we live in through research, unique collections, and experiences such as Cosmonova, exhibitions, activities at the museum, and digitally. Together, we create insight, engagement, and action for a viable planet.

The Geosciences Unit has a team of researchers who conduct externally funded projects and activities within national and international research programs, lead and support infrastructures, as well as supervise researchers at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels. The unit hosts the research infrastructure NordSIMS-Vegacenter: a Swedish national facility for microanalysis and microimaging within geo- and environmental science, which comprises a range of state-of-the-art analytical facilities, including SIMS, TIMS, (LA-)HR-ICP-MS, Raman spectrometer, and SEM. The unit also has equipment for experimental mineralogy and mineral analysis, including a furnace laboratory, X-ray diffractometer, Mössbauer spectrometer, and FTIR spectrometer.

Ongoing research projects are focused on crustal evolution, planetary science, and low-temperature geochemistry. The unit also conducts research in mineralogy, primarily focusing on mineral systematics and mineral chemistry, and manages one of Europe's largest mineral collections.
