Job Description

The incumbent will provide support to the Core Facilities in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following -

  • Assist the core facility manager in maintaining various central departmental equipment and facilities including analytical equipment such as the Raman Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. This will involve basic troubleshooting and repairs if necessary. Experience in operating such equipment is highly desirable.
  • Assist the core facility manager in communicating with vendors and users and arranging for training and maintaining a user list.
  • Maintain the core facility booking system and address any booking issues.
  • Assist with departmental safety activities, as part of the committee member, including but not limited to licensing and developing standard operating procedures and risk assessments.
  • Assist in departmental administration duties as assigned by Professors and Senior Managers. Duties will also include assisting in the various lab-based teaching activities that occur in the department as well as outreach activities.

Qualifications/Requirements/Other Info

  • Possess a BSc (Physics) or BEng (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering).
  • The successful candidate is expected to have a basic level of technical knowledge and be comfortable with taking apart and fixing things. He/she must be interested in working in an education, research and laboratory environment.
  • Experience and familiarity with operations and safety standards in the laboratory will also be useful in this application.
  • Some knowledge of operating and maintaining experimental equipment such as SEM, AFM, Raman, XPS or X-ray equipment will be advantageous.

Employment Notes

Remuneration is based on a 12-month salary structure, with annual variable bonus which is subject to incumbent’s performance and the University/School’s prevailing remuneration policies.

The incumbent will be emplaced at an appropriate appointment grade based on his/her individual merits.
