Social Services Aid (YCC) Seasonal
You will serve as a Social Services Aid (YCC) Seasonal Yellowstone National Park. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty is April-May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2027. Major duties
Major Duties Summary: Provides education and recreation opportunities, as well as, mentoring, guidance, and oversight to teen enrollees. Plans and leads weekend and night recreational activitites (day hiking, backpacking, swimming, rafting, park exploration, wildlife watching, fishing, journaling, etc.) including driving. Assists in leading a crew on work projects (such as land-resource projects, trail rehabilitation, fence construction and installation, food-storage box installation, native species conservation, etc). Provides safe environment (physical and emotional) for self, coworkers, and teen enrollees including identifying and mitigating safety hazards. Mentors and counsels enrollees on personal and shared community living. Serves as a group leader at a residential Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. The Yellowstone YCC base camp/facility is located in Mammoth Hot Springs, headquarters of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, elevation 6,200 feet. The YCC facility consists of a dormitory for enrollees and YCC Staff, who are required to live there, and a dining hall facility that is used for meals and meetings during the weekends. From Monday through Friday, work crews mainly camp in front country and backcountry campsites throughout Yellowstone National Park. Physical Demands: The work requires much physical exertion in the outdoors such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, climbing or similar activities. Usually work requires average agility and flexibility. A condition of employment is wearing of a hard hat as prescribed by regulations. All work projects are physical in nature and include backcountry trail maintenance and construction, campground restoration work, fence work, and a wide variety of research and resource management work projects. Significant mountainous hiking and backpacking (approximately 10 miles a day) is required during recreational outings, resource education activities, and accessing more remote backcountry work sites with often lifting or carrying equipment weighing more than 50 pounds. Work Environment: The majority of the work is performed outdoors. Temperatures and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work. Incumbent must conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to injure self, enrollees, station personnel, or property with which entrusted. All work projects are completed with enrollee's safety in mind.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST or when the 'applicant cut-off' is reached (which may be sooner than 10/13/2026). To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs; counselor in a youth summer camp; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrates the ability to be responsible for and lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility; aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development; aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; or aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of education above the high school level that (a) included at least 12 semester hours of subjects directly related to the work of the position, you must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
You must submit a copy of your transcript(s) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include your name, school name, grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, and date the degree was conferred, if applicable. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not qualified for the position. Requirements
