Scope

To support the development and execution of the Company’s Thermal Coal trading business by ensuring seamless development and execution of core Thermal Coal initiatives and activities on a global scale including Japan and expanding RtMI’s business while strengthening our presence and business in the industry.

Responsibilities

  1. Trading Activities (50%)
  • Execute Thermal Coal trading activities and strategies by collaboration with members in the Division , and in alignment with the Company and Division’s business goals and strategies.
  • Support the Global Head, Coal in the preparation of proposals and strategy papers for management review and approval (referring to management from both RtMI and Mitsubishi Corporation Tokyo “MC Tokyo”). This includes managing all communications with the MC Tokyo stakeholders and initiating discussions for the team with the respective stakeholder / management members where relevant.
  • Communicate, promote and support the implementation of approved thermal coal trading strategies across the Coal Division and regional offices.
  • Review and update Thermal Coal trading strategies on annual basis or according to business needs.
  • Prepare periodical report e.g. market conditions, trends and other resources for management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the achievement of agreed business, operational and financial objectives.
  • Build, maintain and strengthen relationships with suppliers and counterparties, focusing on utility companies in Japan and optimize coal trading books in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other assigned markets.
  • Participate in meetings, industry forums, conferences and business development activities to maintain market awareness and strengthen industry networks.
  • Conduct business travel as required to support commercial activities and stakeholder engagement.
  1. Internal Stakeholder Management (20%)
  • Work closely with MC Tokyo, regional offices and various internal stakeholders, such as: Market Risk to ensure appropriate measurement, monitoring and reporting of Market related risks as well as an accurate Mark-to-Market (“MTM”) profit and loss from both physical and derivative transactions. Credit risk to ensure appropriate policies and procedures for effective management of counterparty’s performance risk stemming from OTC Swap Trades (E.g. margining procedures). Preparation of country risk control documents, resolve various country risk control issues, ensure compliance with requirement of Country Risk Control. Legal and Compliance to complete counterparty registration applications including Anti-Money-Laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC), Security Trade Control (STC) compliance, AEO. Finance and Accounting to create vendor account, ensure tax compliance and resolve direct / indirect tax issues.
  • Proactively engage and create synergy with Coal division members located in regional offices.
  1. Team Contribution and Knowledge Sharing (10%)
  • Work collaboratively with team members across the Coal Division.
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced colleagues where applicable such as for scope like marketing, trading, analysis and related processes.
  • Take the lead especially for the scope of internal stakeholder management especially for communication in Japanese with MC TOK and RtMJ.
  • Contribute to the development of a positive, collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Ensure effective communication with team members especially in terms of sharing market knowledge, industry insights and best practices with team members.
  • Support cross functional initiatives and projects assigned.
  1. Compliance (10%)
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with Company policies, guidelines (both RtMI and MC Global) and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensure appropriate approvals and documentation are obtained for all trading and commercial activities.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant developments in trade regulations, taxation, sanctions, compliance requirements and market practices.
  • Support internal and external audits where applicable.
  1. Ad-hoc Support (10%)

Subject to business requirements and management directions, the incumbent may be required to support:

  • Global risk position management including execution of trade strategies and hedging of market risk using coal index futures where appropriate.
  • Application process for internal risk limits (e.g. Mikoshi) and managing the division’s trading activities to ensure compliance with relevant policies and approved limits.
  • OTC Swaps (Coal Index) product offering directly or indirectly via RtMI or regional offices.
  • Coordinate ISDA negotiations with new and existing customers including close collaboration with Legal, Compliance and Credit Risk functions.
  • Monitor changes in counterparty’s risk (MTM exposures) regularly.
  • Market insights into Coal and/or cross-commodities for information sharing.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in physical bulk commodities trading, commercial marketing, business development or related activities, with more than 4 years of experience in Thermal Coal or other bulk commodities.
  • Degree qualification in business, financial studies or other relevant specializations.
  • Business proficiency in both written and spoken English and Japanese. Japanese language proficiency is required because the role regularly communicates with MC Tokyo, and counterparties in Japan, and is responsible for preparing reports, presentations and business communications in Japanese.
  • Good understanding of accounting requirements, trade operations and documentation, including bills of lading (B/L), letters of credit (L/C) and related trade processes. relevant to trade transactions.
  • Experience contributing to business strategy development and execution is advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially in influencing and negotiation.
  • Good understanding of insurance, AEO, import duties, indirect tax such as VAT, GST etc and compliance.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a dynamic business environment.
  • Excellent PC skills – advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office as well as trade systems, willingness to learn new systems.
