Psychiatrist - Part Time

Main Purpose: To collaborate with MSF medical staff on the integration of psychiatric treatment with basic healthcare services in order to ensure the treatment of patients suffering from severe and common psychiatric disorders.

Accountabilities: Provide treatment for patients suffering from severe and common psychiatric disorders with specific attention to the cultural context.

Provide training and supervision to national and international medical staff (doctors and nurses) on diagnosis and treatment of severe and common mental health disorders according to MSF guidelines.

Participate as a member of the mental health team when present and offer supervision and support to national psychologists and counsellors.

Ensure that guidelines and psychotropic medications from MSF standard drug list are available in the project.

Ensure that proper information on treatment and follow up are collected in order to monitor the provision of care.

Evaluate in-country available psychiatric services including possibilities for psychiatric hospitalization and the quality of these services.

Form a relationship with MoH and exploration of sustainability of psychiatric treatment.

Establish collaboration/communication with medical specialties in the project in order to achieve a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.

Specific Accountabilities: MSF works in partnership with local organizations in the Greater Cairo and Aswan areas to provide services to vulnerable populations. The position of Psychiatrist requires travel within the Greater Cairo area to support the clinics. In addition, travel to Aswan is required, with longer-term stays of two to three weeks or more, depending on need.

In close coordination with the MSAM and project MH supervisors: Ensure proper evaluation of mental health needs of patients in accordance with SOPs, establishing a diagnosis when appropriate and a plan of treatment in cooperation with MHPSS staff.

Provide follow-up consultations to beneficiaries in need of ongoing psychotherapy and/or pharmacological care.

Refer patients to internal or external support as necessary.

Complete required documentation, following all MSF-related protocols and ensuring confidentiality.

Participate in joint sessions with Counsellors and engage in multidisciplinary team meetings to support patients.

Facilitate psychiatric hospitalization for identified patients in keeping with MSF’s SOPs.

Follow-up with psychiatric patients referred to external health care facilities.

Act as focal point between identified psychiatric hospitals and MSF in order to create continuity of care between admission and out-patient care.

Participate and constructively contribute to case discussions during clinical supervision of the MHPSS team and MDT reviews/discussions to support quality care for patients and staff development.

Coordinate the development of treatment plans for specific mental health issues based on patient presentation.

Together with the MHPSS team, create content and develop group interventions tailored to the needs of the target populations for psychotherapeutic and non-psychotherapeutic groups according to common mental health needs as directed.

Develop and conduct mental health trainings for project staff based on assessment of learning needs.

Support efforts to map, engage and develop linkages with psychiatric services (and other service and regulating organizations as applicable) alongside the MSAM and Medical Coordinator.

Education: Essential: Psychiatry specialist Degree with a valid license to practice from the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP)

Experience: Essential: minimum two years of supervised clinical experience working as a psychiatrist and providing psychotherapy. Experience working with international/local NGOs is an asset. Essential: Competencies in clinical diagnosis, treatment and management of complex cases. Desirable: Experience in training and supervision. Desirable: Experience working with vulnerable populations including survivors of trauma, and marginalized groups. Desirable: Experience developing and facilitating mental health groups.

Language : Essential: fluent in both English and Arabic (oral and written)

Knowledge: Essential: computer literacy (Microsoft office)

Job Conditions: Location: Greater Cairo and Aswan, Egypt.

Contract type: Fixed-term Contract – Part-time (working hours: as agreed with the line manager - total of 88 hours per month)
