Hiab Operator
JOB PURPOSE
A HIAB Operator / Driver is responsible for safely operating a truck-mounted crane (HIAB) and driving heavy vehicles to transport, load, unload, and deliver materials, equipment, and goods to designated locations. The role combines professional driving duties with crane operations while ensuring compliance with safety, transport, and lifting regulations.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Operate and drive HIAB trucks and other assigned vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Transport materials, equipment, and goods to customer sites and company locations.
- Ensure compliance with road traffic laws, company driving policies, and transport regulations.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after trips.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and roadworthiness.
- Complete delivery notes, vehicle logbooks, and transport documentation accurately.
- Report accidents, incidents, defects, or delays promptly.
HIAB Crane Operation Duties
- Operate truck-mounted HIAB cranes for lifting, loading, unloading, and positioning materials.
- Assess lifting areas and site conditions before commencing operations.
- Interpret load charts and ensure crane operations remain within safe working limits.
- Secure loads using appropriate lifting accessories and restraints.
- Perform routine checks and minor maintenance on crane equipment.
- Follow approved lifting plans, risk assessments, and safe work procedures.
- Communicate effectively with banksmen, riggers, site supervisors, and customers during lifting operations.
Safety Responsibilities
- Adhere to all Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) requirements.
- Wear and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Stop work and report unsafe conditions when identified.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training programs.
- Ensure lifting and transportation activities are conducted without injury, damage, or environmental incidents.
EDUCATION
A minimum of MVT/MET Intermediate
Professional Certifications
- Valid driver's license is appropriate for operating heavy goods vehicles.
- Certified HIAB/Truck-Mounted Crane Operator certification.
- Valid lifting and rigging certification (preferred).
- Defensive driving certification (preferred).
- First Aid certification (advantageous).
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2-3 years' experience operating HIAB cranes and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Experience within construction, logistics, mining, oil & gas, manufacturing, or warehouse operations.
- Proven record of safe driving and lifting operations.
