REF-050 | Backend Developer with a focus on testing

Epiceros is looking for a Java backend developer who wants to place the emphasis on quality and troubleshooting instead of pure feature delivery.

About Epiceros

Epiceros was founded in 2015 by individuals with long backgrounds from some of the biggest names in the gaming industry. The company builds cloud-based platforms with high performance requirements for the gaming and betting industry, where transaction volumes are large and the margin for error is small.

The team consists of about fifty people distributed between Stockholm and Malta, with the office on Sveavägen. Backend is built in Java as microservices around Kafka.

About the role

You will work in the backend team with the emphasis shifted towards quality. The framework and the tests are written in Java and all backend code is in Java, so you need to be able to read and reason about the application code, not just the test code.

The role is hands-on and broad. You test APIs and integration flows in a Kafka-based microservices environment, you work both automated and exploratory, and when something goes wrong in production, you dig through logs and databases to find out why. The role also includes some responsibility for releases.

The team is small enough that every person is visible, and the person testing sits in the same team as those who build. The test framework is being expanded together; you are not expected to have built one from scratch before.

Epiceros views AI tools in development work positively, such as Claude and Copilot, and describes openness to them as close to a requirement.

What you will do

Continue building and expanding the team's test framework in Java together with the backend team

Test APIs and integration flows in a Kafka-based microservices environment

Troubleshoot in production logs and databases and find the root cause of errors

Work both automated and exploratory with the quality of the platform

Contribute to release work and CI/CD-related work

Use AI tools as support in development and troubleshooting

Who we are looking for

Requirements:

At least five years of experience in professional software development

Hands-on Java as the main language, currently or very recently, with the ability to read and reason about backend code in production

Experience with backend microservices, preferably with APIs and integrations

Experience troubleshooting in production logs and databases

A genuine interest in quality and testing, both automated and exploratory

Ability to work four days a week from the office on Sveavägen

Merit:

Self-built test infrastructure, for example test frameworks, integration test environments, or test suites you have designed yourself, using JUnit, Mockito, RestAssured, TestNG, Testcontainers, Pact, or WireMock

Kafka or equivalent in distributed backend systems

Experience from iGaming and betting, or from banking, payments, credit, and trading

Release management and CI/CD-related work

Swedish. The team's working language is English and Swedish is not a requirement
