Associate Professor in Architecture
The Department of Architecture and Built Environment is hiring an Associate Professor.
Description of the workplace
The position is located at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at Lund University and is primarily linked to the subject Architecture, Form and Design. The position combines research within the bioDigital matter lab with teaching and academic leadership within the master's program Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures (MAEF). MAEF is an international master's program taught in English and focuses on experimental architectural design, digital design methods, digital fabrication, as well as the changing modes of work in architectural practice.
Subject
Architecture with a focus on digital design and manufacturing processes.
Special subject description
The subject concerns digital design processes within architecture and their interaction with material, spatial, and manufacturing-related practices. It encompasses design and research methods that unite programming, parametric and generative modeling, and simulation with physical experiments, material behavior, and computer-controlled manufacturing. The digital methods function as design tools and are simultaneously part of iterative processes where digital and physical operations influence and develop each other. The research can combine scientific investigations with artistic, practice-based, and experimental methods, where design, prototype development, and material work contribute to knowledge production.
Special emphasis is placed on materially anchored approaches within architecture, for example robot-based and additive manufacturing, material-driven design processes, bio-based materials, adaptive or interactive systems, and digital craftsmanship. The subject also investigates how emerging technologies and changed modes of production affect architectural design and practice. At Lund University, the subject is developed within the master's program Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures (MAEF) and the research environment bioDigital matter lab, supported by the infrastructure for robotics and digital fabrication available within LTH.
Tasks
The tasks include:
Research within the subject area and active contribution to the research environment bioDigital matter lab. Teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, course responsibility, as well as supervision and examination of theses. Development and leadership of research projects, including actively seeking external research funding, independently and in collaboration with colleagues. Active participation in the leadership and long-term development and quality work of the MAEF program. Collaboration with industry and society. Administration related to the tasks above.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as an Associate Professor is held by those who have:
Obtained a doctoral degree or other equivalent scientific competence or any other professional skill of significance with regard to the subject matter of the employment and the tasks to be included in the employment. Demonstrated pedagogical skill. Five weeks of higher education pedagogical training or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge, unless special reasons exist.
Assessment criteria
When assessing the eligibility of applicants, special weight will be attached to scientific and pedagogical skill (equally).
The assessment criteria specify what should be considered and what level should be achieved for the eligibility requirements to be considered met. The following assessment criteria must be met for employment as an Associate Professor:
Good national and international level as a researcher, where the requirement for international merit shall be assessed with regard to the character and tradition of the subject. Good pedagogical ability, which means a good ability to conduct, develop, and lead teaching and other pedagogical activities at different levels and with varying teaching methods. Ability to participate in the supervision of doctoral students in studies towards a doctoral degree. Ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about one's activities. Ability otherwise to lead and develop activities.
Other requirements
Very good knowledge of English, both oral and written. Significant documented research experience (for example from a postdoc or research training) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector. A doctoral degree in a subject relevant to the employment. A master's degree in architecture or equivalent documented professional experience in architecture. Experience of teaching in architectural design, including studio-based teaching. Good competence in digital design methods as well as their application within architecture or design. Good ability to cooperate, initiative, and the ability to solve tasks independently.
Other merits
In-depth competence in one or more digital practices with a material focus, such as robot-based manufacturing, additive manufacturing, material-driven design processes, bio-based materials, adaptive systems, or digital craftsmanship. Good competence in programming and its application within architecture or design. Experience of design-driven or experimental research where design, prototype development, or material work contributes to knowledge production. Experience of course or program development as well as pedagogical leadership, especially within architectural design or digital design methods. Experience of preparing and submitting applications for external research funding, independently or in collaboration with others. Having received such funding is an additional merit. Experience of developing research projects or research environments together with others or across subject boundaries.
Consideration will also be given to how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, and innovation within the department, as well as contribute to its future development.
