Researcher in mathematics
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's top 100 universities. Here, there are 40,000 students and 7,400 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and human conditions.
At the Faculty of Science, research and education are conducted in biology, astronomy, physics, geosciences, chemistry, mathematics, and environmental science. Operations are carried out at nine departments gathered within the northern university area. The faculty has approximately 1,500 students, 330 doctoral students, and 700 employees.
Tasks
The research is primarily intended to address problems within the theory of normal random matrices and more general two-dimensional beta-ensembles.
One-dimensional processes (Hermitian eigenvalue processes, etc.) are also relevant. The theory of these kinds of point processes constitutes part of an active research area that offers opportunities to work with a wide selection of problems within pure and applied analysis, for example, focusing on potential theory, operator theory, multiplicative chaos, physical field theories, and more. Consequently, the successful candidate will be given some flexibility to focus on other directions relevant to the subject.
Qualifications
You should have a strong background in mathematical analysis as well as reasonably good knowledge of probability theory. Previous experience in an area related to the project, such as random matrices, is a bonus. Applicants with a doctoral degree in analysis or parts of mathematical statistics, mathematical physics, etc., relevant to the project, will be given priority. ("Relevant" can, for example, mean theory for point processes within mathematical statistics, conformal field theories within physics, etc.) You must have the ability to plan and conduct research at a high level, which should be reflected in your publications. You must be motivated, proactive, able to work independently and in a group, as well as be persistent. Finally, good knowledge of English in speech and writing is required.
Eligibility
Researchers who have obtained a doctoral degree in a subject relevant to the project no later than six years before the application deadline are eligible to apply for the position. Advanced doctoral students, who can be expected to complete their doctorate before the time of commencement, are also eligible to apply.
Assessment basis
The assessment will primarily be based on your scientific merits and your potential as a researcher. Particular weight will be attached to scientific ability within the subject area. Here, the quality of your publications plays a very large role, but your description of previous and planned research is also important. In the event of an interview, your ability to orally present your research will be tested. Otherwise, the assessment is made based on the requirement profile established for the employment.
Terms
The university applies individual salary setting. Please indicate salary expectations in your application. The employment is time-limited to 1 year and shall be full-time.
Application procedure
Apply online! The application must contain a letter where you briefly describe your previous research work, future research plans, and interest in the position (max 3 pages). The application must also contain a current CV, publication list, contact details for at least two references, a copy of degree certificates for the doctoral degree and/or other certificates/grades that you wish to invoke. If possible, an electronic copy of the doctoral thesis is welcome to be attached. All documents must be in PDF format.
Lund University welcomes applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. We see equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. Welcome with your application! We decline all contact from advertising salespersons, recruitment, and staffing companies due to government procurement rules.
