PhD student in chromatin and genome integrity
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. It has approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and human conditions.
Description of the operations
The research group Chromatin and genome integrity (Lund Stem Cell Center and the Department of Experimental Medical Science, Faculty of Medicine), led by Dr. Giulia Saredi, studies the mechanisms that regulate chromatin structure and genome stability in human cells, as well as how these processes contribute to maintaining human health. The group operates in a respectful and inclusive environment with a strong emphasis on open communication and scientific curiosity. We believe that groundbreaking research is best achieved through collaboration and the exchange of ideas. The successful candidate will therefore be encouraged to actively participate in the group's scientific activities and develop their skills in a supportive and stimulating research environment.
Project description
This PhD project will investigate how chromatin structure is maintained during the cell's response to DNA damage and how these processes protect the integrity of the genome and epigenome. The successful candidate will combine methods in cell biology, biochemistry, high-content imaging, as well as genomic and epigenomic techniques to study chromatin dynamics in human cells and neuronal models. The project will generate fundamental knowledge about the chromatin-based mechanisms that preserve (epi)genome integrity and thereby contribute to preventing human disease.
Tasks and responsibilities
The main tasks for a PhD student are to engage in their doctoral education, and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. The successful candidate will conduct an independent research project under the supervision of the research group leader and is expected to actively participate in the research group's scientific and practical activities, including group meetings, scientific discussions, and joint laboratory activities.
Qualifications
Requirements for admission are:
A completed degree at an advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or in some other way acquired within or outside the country, primarily corresponding to such knowledge. A good ability to assimilate the doctoral education. You have expertise in the study of chromatin biology and DNA repair mechanisms in human cells. You have experience in culturing human cells as well as knowledge of culturing and handling human iPSCs (induced pluripotent stem cells). You have expertise in molecular cloning, Western blot analysis, and quantitative image-based cytometry. You have experience in performing analyses to study genome stability and determine cell survival after treatment with genotoxic substances. You have very good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English. You are highly self-motivated and have the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Great importance will be placed on how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education.
