Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. Here, there are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life. Lund University welcomes applicants with different backgrounds and experiences. Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations. Description of the research group The Diagnostic Radiology research group conducts research related to clinical diagnostic imaging. LUCI (Lund University Cancer Imaging) is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and medical practitioners with a primary focus on innovative clinical diagnostic imaging methods within breast cancer diagnostics, especially cancer screening and artificial intelligence. The operations are located at Skånes universitetssjukhus (SUS) in Malmö. Both Diagnostic Radiology and LUCI are led by professor Sophia Zackrisson and consist of researchers with different professional backgrounds as well as technical staff. More information can be found here. Over the past ten years, the LUCI research group has collaborated with the Quantum Information Group at the Department of Atomic Physics, Department of Physics, regarding optical imaging of tissue. The collaboration has deepened over time and is now in a very active phase with clinical studies of optical imaging of breast tissue through a combination of light and ultrasound using the technique Ultrasound Optical Tomography (UOT). An initial goal is to investigate to what extent UOT can be used to reduce the number of biopsies through UOT-based diagnostics of suspected tumor changes. The hypothesis is that UOT can determine whether the current change is benign or malignant and thus reduce the number of women who need to undergo a biopsy. The clinical studies are conducted in collaboration with the startup company Deep Light Vision. However, the current research needs to be supplemented with theory development and studies in image analysis, and we are therefore seeking a qualified assistant researcher for this work. Within the research group, we cherish a good working environment characterized by respect and consideration in our relations with one another, and we strive to create a workplace that is both stimulating and offers opportunities for professional development for all employees. We work continuously to create good conditions for job satisfaction, development, and participation. We are committed to ensuring both physical safety and a good psychosocial working environment. We offer Lund University is a government agency, which means you gain access to special benefits, generous leave, and a favorable occupational pension. Read more on the university's website about what it is like to work at Lund University: Work at Lund University. Duties and responsibilities In this employment, you will contribute to research in two main areas. Firstly, you will investigate how a database of digital UOT images can be built up through clinical studies. Your research will focus on evaluating the possibilities of creating a comprehensive image database that can support further optimization of the UOT technique as well as enable the development of AI-based tools for the analysis of UOT data. Secondly, you will conduct theoretical and computational research that supports the development of the UOT technique. This includes modeling and simulation of UOT signals to study factors such as the impact of tissue scattering on signal strength and resolution, the interaction between ultrasound and optical properties, and how surrounding tissue affects image formation. You will also contribute to the development, validation, and evaluation of software and experimental UOT systems for clinical research studies, as well as to the analysis of clinically collected UOT data. During the period of employment, you will spend part of your working time in a clinical environment and thereby gain valuable insight into workflows within breast cancer diagnostics and their importance for the future implementation of UOT imaging. You will actively participate in research meetings, present your results, and be encouraged to disseminate the research results through national and international scientific conferences. Qualifications For the employment, the following are required: A doctoral degree in physics or a related subject area. Experience in modeling light scattering in tissue as well as modeling the interaction between light and ultrasound in tissue. Good knowledge of English, both oral and written. Previous research experience within the project's subject area.

Great importance will be placed on personal qualities. The duties require that you can work independently, have high analytical ability, as well as good cooperation and communication skills.

Other The employment is a fixed-term employment (special fixed-term employment) for 9 months, full-time (100 %), with preliminary commencement on December 1, 2026, or as agreed. How to apply You apply via the university's recruitment system. The application should include a personal motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, and other documents you wish to invoke (e.g., letters of recommendation).

The Faculty of Medicine is an operational area within Lund University, responsible for education and research in medicine, care, and health. Education takes place in close collaboration with healthcare and is well-anchored in the faculty's strong research tradition. The faculty's research spans a wide field within experimental basic research, patient-centered clinical research, and health science research. The Faculty of Medicine, with over 1,800 employees and 3,000 students in Lund, Malmö, and Helsingborg, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers, and researchers from all over the world. The Department of Translational Medicine is one of the six departments at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine. We conduct basic research in a laboratory environment, patient-centered and clinical research, and also conduct epidemiological studies. We decline all contacts from advertisers, recruitment, and staffing companies due to government procurement regulations.

Open to all We focus on your competence, not your other circumstances. We are open to adapting the role or the workplace to your needs.
