Postdoctoral Researcher in Building Technology
About the company
Welcome to Linnéuniversitetet! Here you will meet 2,200 employees and 40,000 students who together follow the vision of putting knowledge in motion for sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with a gaze toward the future. Our proximity to industry, both locally and globally, gives us long reach and the opportunity for change that leaves an impact. All that is needed is a place where ideas are given space to meet and grow. That is what we have created – and you are invited. Change starts here! The Faculty of Engineering has a broad range of activities spanning nine different departments through which Linnéuniversitetet provides education and conducts research. Engineering education covers everything from short courses of a few weeks or months to five-year civilingenjör programs. The research responds to societal needs in several broad fields – both in the short and long term – through fundamental research and applied research in collaboration with societal actors.
Your tasks
Background of the position Linnéuniversitetet is advertising a two-year postdoctoral position in building technology with a focus on the consequences of climate change for wood-based construction products and buildings. We are seeking a motivated researcher with the ability to conduct high-quality research and publish in leading scientific journals regarding life-cycle-based environmental performance for buildings. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to research addressing central scientific and methodological questions regarding the role of wood-based construction in the climate transition. The postdoctoral position is part of the Formas-funded research project Climate Change Implications of Wood-Based Construction Products and Buildings, which is conducted at the Department of Building Technology and the Department of Forest and Wood Technology. The project is carried out in collaboration with research partners at Chalmers tekniska högskola and Skogsforskningsinstitutet (Skogforsk). Through these collaborations, the project aims to strengthen the scientific knowledge base for climate policy, regulatory development, public procurement, and physical planning, as well as contribute to the long-term sustainable use of Sweden's forest resources. The position is also linked to and supported by the KK-funded research profile Competitive Timber Structures and Linnaeus University Centre for Competitive Timber Structures (LnuC TiSt) within the Faculty of Engineering. These initiatives contribute to the construction sector's green transition by developing innovation and sustainability within wood-based construction solutions. Close collaboration with industry is central to ensuring relevant and practically useful research results.
Job description The postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary research team with a primary focus on a systematic and decision-relevant synthesis of existing research on the climate impact of wood-based construction products and buildings. The postdoc is responsible for compiling existing research results and methods to assess climate impact throughout the entire value chain for wood-based construction. This includes forest management, raw material extraction, primary and secondary processing, construction, the building use phase, handling of by-products, and end-of-life processes. The synthesis shall identify consistencies and contradictions in existing research results. Particular focus shall be placed on identifying parameters, assumptions, system boundaries, and methodological choices that contribute to differences and uncertainties in climate impact assessments. The research will also investigate how methodological differences affect the robustness and comparability of results, as well as the scientific basis for decision-makers, authorities, industry, and other actors. The overall goal is to contribute to a more transparent, consistent, and scientifically robust foundation for assessing the climate impact of wood-based construction products and buildings. The postdoc is expected to actively participate in the departments' academic environments and research networks, collaborate with project partners, participate in national expert workshops and project activities, and disseminate research results through high-quality scientific publications.
Requirements
Qualification requirements For the position, a doctoral degree in building technology, wood technology, or a related field is required, or alternatively a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree in these subjects. The degree must have been awarded no more than three years before the last application date. The degree must be obtained no later than when the employment decision is made. The applicant must have experience in systematic literature reviews from doctoral studies, as well as experience in applying methods and tools for material flow analysis, carbon footprint, and life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the use of wood in building systems and its climate benefits. A good understanding of the production of wood materials and their use in building systems, as well as the environmental impact of building materials and building systems, is a requirement. The applicant must not have previously been employed as a postdoc at Linnéuniversitetet for more than one year within the same or a related subject area.
Assessment criteria Documented research experience in building technology, particularly with a focus on the environmental performance of buildings, is meritorious. The applicant must be able to demonstrate the ability to conduct research in the relevant field. Since the research is conducted in projects together with academic and industrial partners, good collaboration and communication skills are important. Good knowledge of English, both oral and written, is required. Knowledge of Swedish is meritorious. Additional merits include experience in research collaboration with universities, research institutes, or industry, as well as teaching experience in building technology. In the overall assessment, special weight will be given to the applicant's scientific merits and potential to develop into a successful independent researcher.
