Your duties

The purpose of the employment as Assistant Professor is to provide the teacher with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility for an employment as Professor.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) is recruiting an Assistant Professor with a generous start package through https://wise-materials.org The recruitment package for this WISE Fellow includes (i) salary for the recruited faculty member (total of 4 years full-time, over a maximum of 5 years); (ii) funding for research/consumables; (iii) salary for two doctoral students (4 years each); (iv) salary for two postdocs (2 years each); and (v) additional support for travel expenses and premises.

At IFM, the current development of solid-state quantum technologies is facilitated by our leading international role in the material growth of wide bandgap semiconductors (SiC, GaN, AlGaN and Ga2O3) and two-dimensional materials. In collaboration with experimental and theoretical departments, we are currently searching for new defects in wide bandgap materials, with properties suitable for quantum technology. Furthermore, we have strong collaborations with groups at the Department of Systems Engineering (ISY) at LiU that cover a wide spectrum of research on quantum communication, quantum information, and quantum foundations.

In a broader perspective, IFM has internationally leading researchers and several world-leading laboratories within materials science. Research areas extend across materials synthesis and characterization, sustainability, components and applications, including thin films, nanoparticles, 2D, 1D, and mesoporous materials, which are characterized in our state-of-the-art laboratories with respect to structure and composition, down to the atomic level, using for example diffraction, spectroscopy, and advanced microscopy.

Important research and responsibility areas include one or more of the following:

Materials synthesis Deepen current activities in CVD growth of wide bandgap semiconductors and/or 2D materials, or establish activities in materials and processes beyond current activities, for the development of quantum technologies (solid state). Material characterization Investigate the electronic, optical, and magnetic (magneto-optical) properties of materials (qubits). Component manufacturing Using materials as qubits within quantum computing and related areas, such as single photon sources for secure quantum communication, etc.

Your qualifications

We are looking for you who have a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, we are looking for you who have obtained your doctoral degree within the last seven years.

For this employment, particular weight will be attached to scientific skill and, secondarily, skill within specific expert areas (below).

Regarding scientific skill, the following will be assessed:

Requirements for the employment are previous expertise and a proposed research program that complements and expands IFM's current research activities related to materials for quantum technologies Requirements for the employment are a doctoral degree in materials science, chemistry, applied physics, or another relevant field Requirements for the employment are postdoctoral or equivalent relevant experience Particularly meritorious is experience in leading research projects Particularly meritorious is experience in writing and publishing high-quality/high-impact scientific articles, especially as lead or corresponding/last author Meritorious for the employment is experience in participating in and coordinating national or international research activities Meritorious for the employment is previously awarded research grants as principal or co-applicant Meritorious for the employment is previous experience in coordinating research grants

Regarding pedagogical skill, the following will be assessed:

Particularly meritorious for the employment is previous experience in supervising master's students, doctoral students, and/or postdoctoral researchers Meritorious for the employment is previous experience in teaching at the master's level or doctoral courses Meritorious for the employment is previous experience in course planning and development of course material

Other skills that will be assessed for this employment:

Documented expertise in research collaboration Experience of working in a large, internally collaborative research group Experience of establishing new lab activities

Since teaching and research are conducted in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English.
