Principal Product Designer, Retail
Hello! Thanks for visiting 👋
Are you actively looking for a new future perspective? Or are you just browsing the market? Well… you are in the right place!
We are looking for a Principal Product Designer, a rare individual contributor role that reports directly to the Head of Retail Design. Lightspeed IA is our biggest bet: an intelligence layer that acts as a partner for every merchant, moving from an assistant that answers questions to an agent that takes action. Almost nothing in the design of this experience relies on an established model: the way merchants delegate tasks to an agent, supervise its work, learn to trust it, and maintain control. You will contribute to building this blueprint.
The role has two main axes. First, leading the design of our agentic AI experience – the major product development challenge that will define the coming years. Second, raising the level of expertise across the entire retail design organization: not by writing standards, but by designing alongside teams in each product domain to concretely demonstrate what excellence looks like. As a second objective, you will contribute to shaping our mobile point of sale strategy.
This is not a management role. This position is for someone comfortable designing strategies and implementing them pixel-perfect, someone who knows how to maintain a big-picture view of a vast product portfolio while remaining the most operational designer on the team.
Location: Canada is the preferred location, but strong candidates are welcome from anywhere in North America.
Your responsibilities:
- Define new interaction models for agentic AI – designing how merchants interact with an intelligent agent that works on their behalf, direct it, supervise it, and reinforce it.
- Lead the design of our end-to-end AI experience as a hands-on IC, from concept to prototype to polished and shipped products, in close collaboration with AI engineering and product management.
- Raise the level of excellence across the company through direct contribution, stepping into any product domain to explore tasks and advance the most important projects, while leaving teams stronger than when you arrived.
- Lead foresight work aimed at rethinking core merchant experiences, leveraging hands-on exploration and prototyping – concepts ambitious enough to shape strategies and concrete enough to implement them.
- Prototype with AI, daily: working AI-first using modern tools to move quickly from an objective to a functional prototype, and modeling this way of working for designers across the organization.
- Shape our mobile strategy through conceptual thinking and practical support, as a continuous secondary priority.
- Exercise influence without authority: harmonizing collaboration between designers, leaders, and cross-functional partners across multiple teams through clarity, storytelling, and the quality of the work itself.
What you must bring:
- Over 12 years of product design experience with a maker mindset; moving easily from strategic thinking to detailed, polished execution.
- A portfolio that demonstrates exceptional hands-on expertise in user experience, interaction, and visual design, providing work that other designers refer to.
- Experience leading large-scale, loosely defined initiatives involving multiple teams toward measurable results, without having formal authority.
- True mastery of AI: active use of LLM integrations and AI prototyping tools in your workflow, and a strong point of view on AI-based product design.
- Sufficient technical understanding to be a true partner to engineers – you can build prototypes to communicate your ideas and reason while considering technical constraints.
- The ability to influence key stakeholders through clear communication, storytelling, and concrete design work.
- Good taste. You know what beautiful design is, both in appearance and feel, and you push – while helping others progress – to reach that level.
- As a global company with employees and customers outside of Quebec, proficiency in English as a working language is required for this position.
