Major duties

This position serves as a Digital Project Coordinator in the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center (AFC), Special Collections Directorate (SCD), Researcher And Collections Services (RSC), at the Library of Congress (LOC) and reports to a supervisor within the Veterans History Project. The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate assigned digital preservation and access initiatives. Individually and in collaboration with division, IT, and digital media experts, the incumbent develops and executes project workflows that support the curation of digital collections. Content workstreams might include acquisition, processing, digital conversion, and/or access of multi-format ethnographic materials. The incumbent is responsible for staying up to date on best practices in digital archival management and the use of enterprise Library systems that support archival administrative functions. As the Digital Project Coordinator, you will: Coordinate with the division's Public Collecting and Digital Access team and other stakeholders to assist in designing and implementing all workflows using approved project management methodologies. Identify risks and challenges to implementation, evaluates the results of digital curation projects, and suggests improvements to workflows. Independently develop and carry out plans for specific projects and recommends ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency of digital work operations. Provide input for the direction and shape of the character and nature of projects. Ensure all digital activities and plans for assigned projects conform to or enhance current division and Library bibliographic and custodial practices and that they make optimum use of scarce resources and staff expertise. Independently monitor and make recommendations concerning the project from conception through development, production, and introduction to the intended audience. Identify, coordinate and direct work for specific tasks as necessary for the completion of digital projects. Plan the digital projects of a unit, including formulating goals and objectives, and identifying opportunities for improvements in methods and procedures. Coordinate in the managing of various functions working under competing demands and deadlines. Develop and maintain professional standing through a variety of methods with colleagues in related academic fields and library and archival digital project positions, with officials in Congress and government agencies, and with researchers and the public. Collaborate on digital projects related to the division's multi-format ethnographic collections. Work with individuals internal and external to the organization to meet project goals. Consult with supervisors and team leads to resolve problems or issues. Collaborate with supervisor/team lead to plan and implement workflow procedures, team priorities, goal setting and strategies for meeting goals for the unit. Maintain close contact with project partner(s) regarding metadata workflow management, the acquisition of digital files, the development of future workflows, and the development of project products. Explain or present specialized or technical information to individuals or groups with varying backgrounds or levels of experience. Develop and maintain professional standing through a variety of methods, including participation in professional organizations within and/or outside of the Library; presenting papers at meetings, giving briefings, participating in discussion groups or task groups, preparing articles for publication, etc. Independently perform complex research, identify and resolve difficult program issues or problems impacting program initiatives in major agency organizational components. Identify and make recommendations for, and coordinate resolutions and improvements related to challenging agency programs, services, or products. Keep current on major issues in digital research. Conduct research and technical analysis in digital initiatives, policies, reference, content management and policies and metadata standards. Give in-depth analyses on highly complex questions, requirements, and priorities. Participate in evaluating workflow and project products created for staff and the public. Propose means for improving quality, functionality, and efficiency in digital projects. Participate in studies, analyzing findings, and making recommendations to improve preservation, user access, collection development, automation, and other related policies. The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area. The incumbent of this position will work a Flexitime work schedule. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position. Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of digital asset management practices and processes. Ability to apply project management techniques and processes to implement digital library projects or programs. Knowledge of folklife, oral history, documentary studies, and/or other related subject areas to process and describe archival collections.** Ability to serve as a liaison and interact collaboratively with others at all levels. Ability to research, analyze, and provide solutions for workflow, presentation, description, and/or access issues related to digital library services and collections, or comparable digital systems. Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
