KTH is one of Europe's leading technical universities and an important arena for knowledge development. As Sweden's largest university for technical research and education, we bring together students, researchers, and faculty from all over the world. Our research and education encompass natural sciences as well as all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial economics, urban planning, history, and philosophy.

Project description

Research education subject: computer science

KTH's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) announces a PhD position for potential projects funded by Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software (WASP).

More information about the collaboration projects from WASP can be found here: http://wasp-sweden.org/wasp-announces-call-for-collaboration-projects/

The main focus of the research will be on generative deep learning models such as generative adversarial networks (GAN) and variational auto-encoders (VAE). In particular, we aim to develop new generative methods that can produce samples outside the source domain in a way that appropriately reflects the underlying uncertainty. Generative models that can explore the source image manifold more completely can be a powerful tool for generating training examples for supervised learning. In reinforcement learning, generative models containing uncertainty can enable efficient exploration of unknown environments without strong prior assumptions.

The research position is a fixed-term position of 48 months that can be extended by up to one year, depending on whether up to 20% of departmental duties are included, typically teaching. To be employed, you must be admitted as a PhD student at KTH. The start date is open for discussion, but we would prefer the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

We offer

  • The opportunity to pursue a PhD in a dynamic, international research environment in close collaboration with industry and leading universities worldwide.
  • A personal study plan to support your development within your areas of interest.
  • A lifelong network in the form of KTH's Alumni activities.
  • A workplace with many employment benefits and a monthly salary according to KTH's agreements for PhD salaries.
  • Work and studies in Stockholm, one of Europe's fastest-growing capitals that simultaneously has proximity to nature and the sea.

Eligibility for admission

To be admitted to research education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • completed a degree at an advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or
  • otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

The applicant must have a Master's degree in an area such as computer science, electrical engineering, informatics, or related fields. Documented written and oral English and programming skills are required. Experience in machine learning and computer vision is a significant asset. A strong background in mathematics and strong programming skills are also required.

Selection

To succeed in your PhD studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. During the selection of applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • maintain a professional approach, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues,

will be assessed.

After the eligibility requirements, great importance will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Target degree: PhD

Information about admission and employment

Only those who are admitted or have already been admitted to education at the doctoral level may be employed as a PhD student. The first employment as a PhD student may last for a maximum of one year and thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time research education for four years.

Information about PhD studies, eligibility, selection, etc., can be found on KTH's website for PhD studies. Information about doctoral programs and subjects at the doctoral level can be found on KTH's website.

A person employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote themselves to their own research education, but may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), work with teaching, other research, artistic research, and administration.
